Coffee warming my insides, fire warming the house.

Ended up with a dusting of snow yesterday morning. I can get used to this not shoveling every day!

 

45/75 Threw a couple small cottonwood pieces in the stove this morning, just to bump the temp a touch.

 

-4c/25f under clear skies. It will warm up good today just like spring! Our heat wave should start going away this weekend. I saw 10c/50f yesterday! I'm sure weve broken high temp records the last 3 days in a row. If the mountains don't have a good snow pack it affects so many others not just us. Im a snowballs throw from the continental divide so our spring melt goes west and south but a few minutes drive from here it goes east to help the farmers of Alberta and I'm assuming Montana. We have snow coverage but not much. It looks like we have snow coming this weekend so fingers crossed Ill be able to complain about snow clearing. No fire last night just because I worked late and it was mild out. It is kind of nice to take a few days off but I'm about ready to jump back in.

Thanks. We had a forest fire within a 10 minute walk from my house this last summer so not looking for a repeat. Heres a picture my wife took with her phone from the couch. It got a lot closer but thought this was an interesting perspective. You know things are getting scary when you can see the fire from the couch. We are at 3900 ft which seems low compared to some of our members here but in Canada its relatively high up. We dont have much more than rock, grass and ice above 7000ft.

 

Down to 30 tonight and house is at 66, so I cleaned out the stove and started a fire with red oak. There were some coals in the bucket

Thats horrible! We were on evacuation alert but due to the help of firefighters it didnt reach us and no homes were lost with this fire. Funny thing though, if they gave us an evacuation order they wouldn't let us leave with our camping trailers so we had to move that and some of our belongings out of the area. We found a nice lake front camping spot about an hour away that we would escape to once in awhile. The air wasnt so heavy with smoke and ash out there thankfully. At home it was like it was snowing with burnt needles landing everywhere. We had a few embers land in town that ignited but they were put out quick. Scary stuff. I could sit in the yard with a beer and watch the bombers and and helicopters. Unfortunately some of that ground was so steep that it wasnt safe for the ground crews and if they dropped water on it, it would push the fire down hill. It was a bit of a balancing act. We were lucky compared to many this last summer.

 

Let the gas furnace take over today. Dead wooded a sprawling white oak in someone’s backyard yesterday. Lots of climbing/rigging. Came home and started feeling crumby. Just been laying low today and hydrating.

 

Got to 43 here today. Beautiful sunset also.

 

Currently 46°F, stove is cold. Too warm for the wood stove. Just letting the propane furnace make up the little bit of heat I need

 

Was 58F here today. Been around 35F for a low the last few nights. Burning lodgepole.
