Who can bust the most different species for the year 2024? * Buck and split at least one round of wood (per species) into minimum 4 quarters * Take a picture of the split round to submit for each species * Add pictures to this forum. Points will be added by your name periodically on the forum * Each different species is worth 1 point * Submissions can be posted up until 11:59:59 Dec 31st * Whoever has the most points at the end of the year wins Winner gets... bragging rights? Kick start it off (I haven't split much to begin the year) so far all I've split is some yellow poplar aka tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera).
But instead of uploading a pic of splits, just list off what different species you've split so far in 2024. We can keep a running list/leaderboard. Might be cool to see a running grand total of how many different species are being used for firewood
I’ve been working on the same Pin oak Quercus palustris in 2024. So far this year the weather has been crap on the weekends so it’s been slow going. At least another 1/2 cord to process. The yard is smelling sweet

So far this year? Gamble oak Arizona white oak Emory oak Hackberry Mulberry Tamarisk (salt cedar) Ponderosa pine Pinon pine Alligator juniper Utah juniper (shaggy bark juniper) Arizona ash Willow I come across many varieties of wood within the city parks and lakes. Not nearly as many as when I worked for a tree service though.
So far this year (mostly small quantities): Black locust white oak Chinese chestnut elm catalpa Norway maple eastern red cedar white ash black cherry
For me this year is red oak, white oak, cherry, black gum, sweet gum, yellow ash, white ash, eastern red cedar, and pignut Hickory. Didn't want the gum but had to take it to get the white oak.
Not a ton of variety in this area, but enough to get myself on the leaderboard (for now). As of 1/29 I have hit 6 species as follows: Eastern Red Cedar Ponderosa Pine Silver Maple Siberian Elm Hedge Black Locust
