I was at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford today for an annual appointment (went well). On my way out this tree caught my eye. I noticed a plaque on it. Have you cut any of this Buzzsaw Brad?

Glad your visit went well.
That one is different. I'll admit I never heard of it.

When we stayed in State College Pennsylvania last year they had them all around the theater next to our hotel. Much smaller and very cool. We plan on planting some.

Similar to bald cypress in that it is a deciduous conifer. There the similarity kind of ends. The Dawn redwood will grow much, much bigger. I take care of a few for some of my clients. Very cool trees!

Not redwoods but I have some giant sequioas in pots that will go in the ground next spring.

The DW will commonly have the deep furrows on the lower trunk. Usually aligned with a limb above. The bark is cinnamon colored where the BC is gray. From a distance the structure looks identical.

I have a dawn redwood growing next to the house. Pretty decent size.
Its kind of a PITA with the needles when they drop. They like to clog up the spouting. I actually get on the roof and blow them off.
I do like the color in the fall.
I can't find any of fall pics right now, these are from realtor 7 y/o ago. genMbmob.1000087564_7_1.jpg

I was thinking Bald Cypress as well. I planted a Dawn redwood a few years ago but it didn't make it. I don't think it got enough water. :picard:

I’ve been trying to grow 4 of them over the last several years. Just couldn’t get them to take and get established in my climate. Gave up and replaced them with Colorado Blue Spruce. Maybe those will do better. They grow here naturally.
