Anyone have a recommendation on a heat powered stove fan?

I was watching a video on cleaning the glass of my wood stove and a couple of the videos had these heat powered fans for a wood stove. They seem relatively cheap.

Wondering if anyone has a recommendation on a brand and/or whether they are even worth getting?

    Appreciate any advice.

We tried one from Amazon…. We sent it back. The curling fan in the living room was much more effective.

Had one. Liked it. It wasn't silent. Just a slight whirring noise, but enough to irritate the wife. Stopped using it, under orders. Gave it away.

    It was like this:

    Premium 4

If I could find one that was silent I would get one.

I had one and it got louder and louder and then it stopped working. I didn’t see the need to replace it. To me it’s more of a stovetop trinket or doodad, kinda cool but really not all that functional. If you want one that’s fine but I wouldn’t expect much out of it. I could see it being practical off grid with no other options. I have a ceiling fan and it moves air much better.

Not sure where they got it but I know a guy with a sterling engine fan. Really a cool fan that has been working for years. Heat doesn’t seem to kill it like some of the others. I know he didn’t buck up for that thing but it sure is a neat conversation starter.

This topic seems to come up a few times each year.

If you just want a toy, get one. If you want to move air this is doing it backwards. To move the warm air you first need to move the cool air because cool air is more dense than warm air. A small fan is all you need and running it on low speed does the trick.

The best example is if the house has a hallway, sit the fan on the floor near the farthest point and run it on low towards the stove room. This moves the cooler air into the warmer air and that cooler air is replaced with the warmer air. It works!

I have one, I think I got it from a place in Sweden a few years ago, it was’nt cheap..
They are more of a conversation piece than an air mover..

No I know they are not, pretty cool from a mechanical standpoint tho.

I'm in the "this is a gimmick" camp regarding these. I believe these move no more air than if you set up a dozen pinwheels to blow in the wind.

I’ve had my steelhead fan for a few years now it moves air quite well. If you don’t mind spending the cash I highly recommend.

We have the Voda fan, similar to what they sell on Amazon and have replaced it twice. They last until you mistakenly overfire the stove, then the bearings sieze. Oops! They don't move much air. They do give a visual indication of the heat of the stove from a distance. It lets us know when to throw in some more wood without walking up to the stove or squinting to see the flue thermometer.

Pass a lit lighter in front of it… that will be all the proof anyone needs.

It’ll blow a bic out. It will damm near blow a sheet of paper horizontal when the stove is really choochin.

Thanks for sharing. I'm going to have to rethink the conviction I had that they're just a gimmick (without any personal experience with them) and seriously consider getting one of these. Seems like the cheap ones are indeed toys, but the higher end ones might be worth something. If nothing else, my two growing boys would be fascinated by the full view of moving mechanical parts within them. My stove has a blower but I rarely use it as it's just another thing to gobble up electricity. That and I already run a couple fans to push hot air through my house as it is.
