Colder here. What's your temp? What ya burnin?

5 right now, was -1 , coals keeping inside at 73 , Weather guessers say one more night of 0°F Don't get me wrong I like playing with fire but don't like burning this much.

And a bonus from the upcoming temperature rise the little 3 1/2" of snow we have is going to melt

 

I guess everything is relative.

I think most that know me would say I'm probably younger at heart than most my age.
It's good and bad at the same time.

I was talking to one of my coworkers yesterday and he got a late Christmas card from one of his suppliers in China. He was commenting of the cool stamps on the envelope. I told him not to lick the stamps. He told me "why would I ever lick a stamp" and I about fell out of my chair. This guy has never seen stamps that were not a sticker.

Ok back to the topic.

It's been pretty cold here, we have been burning some combinations of firewood that I've never done before. My favorite for really cold temps is now Honey locust and red oak. That combo puts out a lot of heat for a long time. Elm and Honey locust are another of my favorites.

Right now it is 4° out, 70° and rising in the stove room and elm with ash in the quadrafire.

That's pretty cool. I'm sure that's pretty relaxing when it's warmer out. Surely you have a waterfall or some sort of fountain or something to make water noises when it's not frozen.

 

That "new" stove really seems to be working well for you compared to the old one you had.

 

-11f here but only 3MPH breeze. Started using a, very, little of the 6-7 year old locust and not disappointed with it's performance. Hope to go out this weekend to see if I can get to it and get more as I like it, a lot.

Cold cold is gone for now, should hopefully not see anything colder than -22C/-4F in the next 7-10 days. Get to play catch up on sleep lol

5 this morning high today 15. One more day of this . Next up is mid to upper forties and rain lasting 4 days. Red oak and beech keeping 74 inside.

 

I sometimes wonder how many rocks I have in my head to be honest. What started off as a "helper" to save a few bucks a year morphed into a whole nother creature that went too far. The temps I grudgingly deal with, but the no sleep/babysit the stove like it's my job is done as of this year. Either a pellet stove or a furnace fix is the only way forward. And maybe I'll win the lotto and can move somewhere very warm!

 

Some of the temps Rope used to post were also mindbogglingly cold

Oh yeah seriously

 

Woo hoo! Weve finally warmed up! It was -11c/12f when I got up. I've been mixing birch in with my softwoods lately and notice a big increase in ash. When I went to do my reload this morning I pushed the coals to the back and scooped out the front half and then pulled the coals back to the front and loaded er up with larch and birch (north/south loading). When I went outside to get the ash bucket the air didn't have any bite to it. This is so much nicer than -40c/-40f!

I dont mind it so much. We have snow on the ground from Halloween to late march or longer but we dont get -35, -40 temps for long stretches thankfully. It takes a bit more planning and it gets to cold sometimes but you learn to live with it. I learned years ago to clean up the yard before winter since whatever is on the ground or in a corner wont be seen until late march due to the snow cover.

 

Cold snap is over for now, yee haw!! 33 F outside and burning Douglas fir. Been reading through the last few posts, and you Canadian guys have cold winters!!
