Pignut hickory and tulip poplar. Couple rounds of sassafras too. FBM find. He only had pics of the TP but said i could cut and take whatever wasnt tarped. Bigger remnants the other hoarders didnt take. Hickory sectioned up easily with the Isocore. Some short chunks for the smoker. Guy came home while i was working and commented that nobody wants the big logs. I smiled and said these arent that big. Took only the correct length (i didnt cut them) tulip poplar rounds. Finished in a light rain. Decent load. Ill go back for the white oak as they are nice and straight, but kinda buried so maybe a PITA to dig out. Now that i think of it i can use the TP shorts too.
Not many guys would be out cutting in the weather we had yesterday, myself included. Although that hickory is worth the price of wet hands, I’d say
It was dry when i started and rain was rather light so i kept going. Those that see my posts know i dont like having it under loaded.
Got the hickory split and stacked today. Before and after stack pictures. The white oak should fill it out
I have no evidence ( pictures). I'm not too good as a photojournalist. Swapped out the old Briggs for the HF Preditor , easy swap. Hydraulic oil & filter changed (it needed it bad and was low, 3 gallons out and almost 5 back in), removed the nail from the valve handle and installed a bolt with double nut so it won't vibrate loose ( I didn't have a pin like it originally had). Instructed the operator that oil changes are critical and must be done on a regular basis (much more regular than the previous motor had) with the first around the 5-hour mark. Going to find him an hour meter to install to help keep track. The old motor will be donated to my coworker for his 13-year-old son to play with. He is into minibikes, and go kart sort of things. Good for the kid and it gets repurposed instead of going directly to the scrap pile.
What....you mean you're supposed to change the oil in a splitter? Guess I should think about that sometime ...
Solid wood get there Brad! Wish I could get some poplar like that. This primo RO is a pain to try and keep the house under 76. Keep having to go down and load 1-2 splits at a time.
I have a little less than a cord BL and the 2.5 cord of HL from the monster, rest is all chestnut oak. Be nice to have some shoulder wood. EDIT; burning all the RO I have now, so there's probably a cord plus still in the basement.
These are decent size logs, I will need to use my tractor to load you up. This way you can also get the pleasure of cutting them up.
The only problem I have with hickory (other than being kinda stringy and taking 2 years to season) is that when you cut it the bark is so hard and brittle, that pieces fly off and hit you in the face like a rock. Every. Single. Time. . . Good btu's though.
Nice. I know they're not big on btu's but I do wish we had more Sassafras around here. I hardly ever see them, and when I do, they're usually small or dead. I just think they're interesting trees. I would gladly replace all of the Boxelder with Sassafras.
