Cleaned my chimney cap this morning. Fixed seal around ash pan yesterday. Filled the wood bin this morning and fired up the Wood Gun. Feels good to have it going again after taking two days off. Weather was fairly warm and I didn’t want to mess with doing that stuff with family here. And by waiting, the roof was all clear this morning. Just wet shingles.

Next came playing, I mean working, in the mud. Hand loaded up two fires that were going good last night, waited until the flames got going good. Then used the tractor to push some stumps and brush right up into them. Got them going well. Two more almost gone. Each night I’m exhausted from the workout and fresh air. It is dirty work now that the warmer temperatures have turned all the ground soft. But I look at it as an opportunity to get these huge piles gone before the snow finally gets here. Everything is wet. More rain today. Tuff to get a new pile going. Hoping I can get them all gone before any deep stuff gets here.

How do you heat when the gun is out of commission?

We have an Oil Boiler as well. For us that is our backup. But for the bank and Insurance, they want something other than wood, for your primary heat. So it is really primary heat for their financial protection.

Yes. It does. Always nice to know. If we need to go somewhere, all we have to do is turn the power off on the Wood Gun boiler, and the oil boiler will take over.

Yup. Only snow I saw was around eagle lake in an extremely shaded area the wind drifted it into. Dealers are hurting his year because the weather isn’t cooperating and sales are non existent and the service side is dead because of nobody breaking anything. Gonna be a bad year for a lot of places.

Right after Christmas. Sickness has gone right through our house. I’m the last one. Headaches, chills, congestion. Sitting in boiler room right now where it is about 88. Feels nice. Time to return to bed me thinks.

My wife and I, and our three teenage kids, watched Rise of The Gaurdians the other night. We hadn’t seen that sense they were much younger. Everyone enjoyed it. If you have a kid or grandkid, watch it with them. They will enjoy the time with you, and you with them.

Reading back over the last few days since I was on FHC, it looks like that respiratory infection and flu thing swept through FHC as well. Not here, but I got lucky. I also think that my coworker that I sit next to that gets sick like every two weeks from his 2 young kids that are in day care has helped me get a good resistance to all of that garbage.

Yesterday, I went over to my buddy's house that has the bobcat Toolcat and we cut down and blocked up rounds that were widowmakers and some that were already down blocking the woods trail on his land.

Got to his place by 9am, and we took my 4x8 trailer into the woods and filled that and the bucket in the toolcat like we typically do. Lots of Ash. He also had a decent sized box elder fall over by his house a couple days ago. So we made quick work of that and got a few rounds of usable wood from that as well as 15-20 knots that his BIL will turn into bowls. We loaded up the usable box elder rounds and the the rest in his burn pile. We used the toolcat bucket to rip up the roots of the BE so he just needs to put some soil there and grass seed in spring. Then it was lunch time. His wife got us subs, which was perfect.

That was a pretty full load. Got home about 1:30pm, and got set up to split the haul. IMG_20231227_133817861_HDR.jpg

There was a bit of mud in the woods, it was 40°, but we switched from Tuesday to Wednesday as it rained Tuesday and it was dry Wednesday. You can see the mud line on the trailer tires. As much as I'd love to have a bigger trailer, for cutting at my buddy's land, the 4' wide trailer is a squeaker around those tight 90° corners he has on the trails and a 5" wide trailer won't clear a couple corners and narrow spots. The 4 wheel steering on the toolcat is really put to good use, but making the trails wider is the next step. Eventually the trails will get a little wider once we cut a few more dead ash trees down. They are still standing so well get to those later. He he and his kids, as well as when I come over to help have been making the trails over the last couple of years. There were no trails prior to him buying the 50 acres behind his house a couple years ago. This wood cutting between Christmas and new years has turned into a tradition for us.

Then I unloaded and split it. The pile that came from the rounds we put in the bed of my truck netted this IMG_20231228_150922983.jpg

Here's the two other piles that were from the trailer
    IMG_20231227_162748213.jpg IMG_20231227_162738904.jpg

That was all the daylight and energy I had yesterday.

Today I waited until the afternoon, after the heavy rain ended. It still rained on me, but I stayed just dry enough.
    IMG_20231228_135739863.jpg
Where I started today, the left bay. I'm working on the 3rd row( 5 rows per bay). Center Bay is this year's wood. I had to use my jig and shorten a few splits.

Here's after the first load that was in the trailer from yesterday.

IMG_20231228_151846089.jpg the second load, from the bed of my truck is in the trailer.

After that load was stacked IMG_20231228_153357454.jpg
And the final results after the third, the pile that was on the driveway by the splitter, was stacked.

4th row pretty much all the way to the ceiling, I'll have to get the step ladder to get the rest of the 4th row to the roof, as well as the higher parts of row 5. One more trailer load and that will finish off the left bay.

Ran out of daylight again and after getting rained on and moving and stacking that wood, I'm tired.
