I actually had the gas company out to my place a couple months back. They city is doing lead water line replacement in some areas that still need it and they ran right into my gas line. It cleared the block… They had it all marked out too visually marked and rfid marked and they still hit it.
I work for a utility, the maps are commonly not accurate, or even sometimes flat out wrong, but it's still the law to call before you dig, even something as simple (shallow) as planting flowers legally requires an 811 call. 811 In Your State The fines for interrupting some utilities can bankrupt even large companies, not to mention the danger of hitting underground lines (gas, electric) Hitting a line after it was incorrectly marked (or marked correctly, but from a bad map) takes any/all the repair responsibility and fines off of you. (unless maybe they could prove that you damaged their line(s) on purpose (maliciously) after you found it)
Thank you. I will call at some point soon. I tried a few weeks ago but I’m not sure I called the right number. It sounded like somebody answered but I couldn’t hear very well. I probably sounded like a prank caller.
They marked the Same line 4 times. Turns out they had marked the old service line that was dead. we hit an unmarked live gas line feeding the house. It was like 6’ off the marker paint. That thing made a noise louder than the auger we were digging with.
We had a retaining wall put in a few years ago and I told them to call 811. Yep, they knew best and didn't bother. Hit our gas line just outside the house. Got very lucky as line was not installed correctly so utility company replaced at their cost.
