What's up fellas, so I was driving past this house with a tree down in the front yard. I asked if they were going to use it or could I cut it up and take it. They said, "Take it away". So, I got what I could fit, but I'm wondering what kind of wood it is and is it worth going back for the rest. It's about a half mile from me. Thanks.
[QUOTE="PatrickNY, Free wood is good wood and close to home even better. It looks kinda like a birch to me but I am for sure not a expert
Black birch. Lots of BTU's with a relatively short drying time. Only downside are the heaping piles of coals left behind that you'll have to burn down.
Yes it’s Black Birch, high BTU. Great wood. Get all you can. Drys fast however it also rots fast. Keep the rain and snow off it.
Awesome stuff. Like Paul said it can rot fast in log or even rounds. Crack em in half at least. Once it’s split up I don’t see it rot.
Black birch. You done good Patrick. Go get the rest ASAP Sniff some splits. Has a pleasant minty smell to it.
Black birch, it's shocking how fast that stuff will punk up and rot. Lost a few logs because I waited too long to get to them.
