Finished splitting and stacking the Black Locust this weekend. Left me just shy of finishing my stacks behind the garage. So I made one last trip out into the woods, and hauled 2 more small BL trees, and 2 small ash - branch size stuff. The back of the garage is officially full! Brings the grand total to just under 10 full cords c/s/s this year; all hand split. Starting from zero after last winter. I burn around 3 per year, so this is my Three Year Plan; though it's not going to play out that way. Here it is. A couple views from the road - you'd hardly know you're looking straight at 10 full cords of firewood. View from the house - it's all sitting basically right across the driveway, for easy access. As you may have noticed, the end without the cribbing is tipping over a little. I'm burning that stack first anyway, after shoulder season. The uncovered stuff is maple; the stuff with the blue tarp is the poplar. Here's a view from the north side of the pines. Some more maple next to the poplar. You can also see my Basod style branch cutter/tarp holder in this pic. I think the previous owner made it, so mine predates his! And finally, my masterpiece. 5.7 cords of ash and Black Locust. Once this is seasoned, it will become my "special reserves" - the stuff I'll burn in the dead of winter. It's surrounded by a bunch of blue spruce trees that are just out of the shot, to the left. There's only about a 4-5ft wide walk path, which I'm hoping will keep snow from drifting in behind it. 10 pallets worth of ash on this side: 8 pallets worth of Black Locust on this side: I have more of that vinyl that I'm using as a top cover; should be enough to finish covering these stacks. And if that wasn't enough for you, you can always come to this side and split some more! [EDIT] - Think any of these pics could make the gallery?
The last few pics of the stacks was nice to look at, all covered with Dennis' corrugated roofing, he would be proud.
Nice looking stacks there. I'm trying to get a head as much as possible as well. This is going to be a busy winter in scrounging. Keep up the good work and stay warm
yes, nice stacks and I must be a true FHC member when all I saw was the stacks and not the neat fish on the barn wall!!!
