Split some wood this morning for my parents.

No. Its a lot softer almost like splitting clay. The axe/maul would embed itself without cracking it IIRC.
Ill see if i can find the pics.

 

This stuff was a live tree cut down July so it sat less than 5 months.

 

Nice bunch of BTU's there. Good of you to keep them in firewood. Enjoy your folks while you can! Certainly wish ours were still around.

 

Had an opportunity to use up a personal day so what better to do than play with firewood! Back to the parents..

Anyone ID this split. Gave me an elm vibe so I pitched it aside.











Sorted all the long stuff and got it trimmed.


Still a good bit to split but he’s out of skids/pallets. Probably go back this weekend.

 

LOL you guessed correctly on the elm, but I'm sure you were fairly confident in your guesswork.

 

Could be Black Gum ?? Was it light or heavy ??

 

I love splits with built in kinlin. I can hear the popping and crackling.

 

The Wood Wolverine I dig that contraption you have to get uniform split lengths. And glad you got time with your Dad. Like some others have said, I do miss my old man.

 

It was heavy. Hit a couple more piece similar but not quite as much protest. I cut 90% of dads wood. He must have snuck some rounds in from who knows where. I certainly wouldn’t have brought it there.
I had one run in with gum. After the second piece I started throwing it all aside. Pizz on that!

 

I saw the idea somewhere, can’t remember where.

Quickie wood cradle for dad

 

American elm. Stringy but burns well. We all know you love elm.

 

10a-3:30 helping dad w/ firewood today. Stacked most of what we left Thursday, then put about 2 tanks through the splitter.


We improvised with some plywood scraps on the ground. Hope to get him some pallets soon.


Threw in the towel here. Mix of horse chestnut, oak, birch and ash.

Great day to hang with dad. I’d call it quality time for sure.

Still having PTSD from the elm?

 

Yes on the elm. Really weird to have a couple pieces, I'd guess 4-5, mixed in there. Dad got that birch from a friends place so he thinks it came from there.
I'll have to measure on how much was done. I'm a terrible guesser. That horse chestnut had a lot of small rounds from the tree service so his chunky pile is huge and we're not done. If we can find enough pallets, I'll build him a bin.

 

Back at it today. Got there and dad was already running the splitter.


Called it quits here.

Guess I can pretty much thank dad for the work ethic.

Final day of splitting. 1/2 day at the shop then to dads to finish off his hoard. We’re both beat.




Should be the final cut with the re-sizing cradle.


He’s got a good bit to stack. Plans are to make a chunk bin near the carport.


Eager to see what the final tally is.
