Ad appeared on CL last night at 10:30 pm for free apple firewood. (Yard tree) Got up at 5:30 while it was still dark and 7 degrees out! Brrrr! I think I must really be crazy but I managed to be the early bird and got the worm. Two loads! I only have a small bed but it would have made one full sized load. Couldn’t believe it. I will probably never see something like this again for a lonnnng time, not in this area. I couldn’t believe how dense and heavy apple is. The rounds were HUGE so the tree was very old. Being green made it even worse. This was a real unicorn for my neck of the woods.
I got a CL score about 4 years ago that was apple, cedar, and white birch. Yard trees that were taken down to build a garage. 4 pickup loads.
Holy cow thats a biggun. Hats off to you not only for getting up at 530 but with it that cold. The true FHC spirit right there. Didnt think it got that cold in AZ. Great feeling scoring wood you wouldnt normally have the opportunity to get.
Oh yeah. Sometimes it goes negative at this altitude in this northern part of the state. We even have a ski resort here.
Did you get it all? How close to home? I see you chained it down in the fourth pic! Aint nobody messin' with Timberdog's apple score!!!
Remember what a PITA that apple score was in Wallingford. A lot of work for little wood. Did you burn that yet?
Yes I did manage to get it all. The stuff was so heavy after I loaded the “small” pieces for the first load the whole drive back I was contemplating just settling for that and quitting but something in me said no go for it all and I’m glad I did but it was a lot of work. The second load was the big heavy pieces and I could tell stories about each piece in order to get them in my truck. It was definitely a combination of brawn and brains—and leverage really. Not bragging, it was just an incredible amount of energy both physical and mental and took everything I had in all departments. I guess you could say I was just more wooden-headed than the wood, lol. But it did provide quite a feeling of accomplishment through perseverance. And then the wood was positioned right in front of an ice patch which really threw another monkey wrench into things because I couldn’t get traction. At one point my only goal was to not get crushed if things slipped. Ultimately my hand winch saved the day and made it happen. It was on the other side of town—about a 20 minute drive. Normally my chainsaw would have been the solution but it was 6:30am in a neighborhood on Sunday morning and I didn’t feel like waking everyone up and getting pelted with rocks from angry neighbors. If I waited till later in the day I risked losing it to someone else who saw the ad and at that point I simply had too much invested to take that chance. So by then I was fully committed and had to figure out how to make it happen. Oh, that chain is for a gate out of frame, not for the wood.
Most of it is gone. A lot went through my stove and some went to cook the thanksgiving Turkey at my uncle’s house last year and this year. I still have about half a face cord left from 2020 that I’m saving.
I drove past some free Blocust yesterday. Big ol tree too. Was laying at a spot off the highway where 'debris' will be piled after storms, free to whoever wants it (far as I know anyways). There was it and I think a couple of of Sass. I had a saw with me, buy my woodgetting eyes saw quite a lot of punk (or maybe not) in the Blocust as I cruised by. Yes, this post is for Brad. lol
I'd bet it's still there! Honestly...maybe cause it's Christmas time....the thought of 'I have plenty of wood, maybe someone else doesn't'. If I were scrounging, I'd have taken at least two loads out of there.
