A coworker friend of mine procured a large Shagbark hickory score up in his area of the state. A tree service had taken the tree down in a woman’s front yard and left the wood. She had it for free on Craigslist/FB Marketplace for months with surprisingly no interest. He made the arrangements, and got upwards of 6+ loads from her. I hooked him up with a load of 2.5-3 year old black locust a couple weeks ago, so he brought me a bunch of shorts and random lengths today. I actually asked for the shorts being that they’re perfect for wife-sized pieces for her to load when I’m not home. Just finished splitting it all and it smells amazing  Nice to have them delivered within 20’ of my splitter as well. He has more for me to make it an even trade, quantity-wise.

Appears that it split nicely for you. I've had some that is quite difficult and stringy. Great wood!

The knotty sections made the splitter struggle a bit but 25 tons of hydraulic pressure prevailed in the end :salute: The straight, knot free pieces weren’t bad at all.

That's a great score, my friend. Nice splits. I've never gotten shag bark, seen a few north of here.

Although they’re fairly prevalent in this area, it’s not often I score any. I would think pecan would be close to if not right on par with shag. I know you’ve gotten some large pecan scores before

Nice! Hickory a rather rare score for you, no? Too bad it doesnt have a better shelf life.

The shagbark fairy delivered again this morning, and threw some decent ash into the mix as well. Between the ash I scrounged yesterday and everything that was dropped off this morning, I’ll have a bit to process this week. It’s too soupy out back right now for me to want to do any serious work on my one day off this week.
