Am I the only one who finds some saws very stinky when running? I ran a friend's stihl today and it burned my throat. My stihl does the same thing at times, but my husqvarna's are fine. Why? Is it like this across the board?

My stihl has a drinking problem compared to my husqvarna saws as well. Probably 3x the consumption.

Ha! You could have been describing my old Chevy Blazer. Husband says it's the caburator, we put that on in the early 90's, still kickin' but stinky.

Try running a tank or two of Febreeze through them and see if that helps. :D

That was my first thought as well. Some 2 cycle oils reek, while others smell like a motocross track :)

I've never noticed a difference in smell, some brands smoke more than others it seems. I've been runing Amsoil Saber or Schaffers 7000 for the past few years at 32:1. I don't notice any different smell.

But, since I've had Covid a couple of times, my smell is not the most accute.

There was one user here who put some kind of additive into his 2 stroke mix that made it smell fruity or something. Apparently they had different scents you could choose from too. I believe it was Wouldsplitter

Sounds like it needs the carb adjusted.
What brand of oil, and mix ratio is being used?

My FIL uses additive in his old Falcon to make it smell like cotton candy.
My 59 Pioneer doesn’t smell any different than my Husky’s. I too would say it’s how rich or lean they are tuned.

Yes. I haven't in a saw but have in my large scale RC cars. I have a big Echo backpack blower that smells more and differently than any 2 stroke ive owned no matter the oil or tune. If the wind is at your back blowing leaves, which is how I try to do it for obvious reasons, you're constantly getting exhaust fumes. For that reason I'm going to try some scent in the mix again. This way I'll enjoy the smell of killing brain cells.

Strawberry Cheesecake sounds like a good one to try.

My saws smell like artificial cherry when I run them. It is the burnoff of the silicone spray I use to shine them.

I don't know what oil my friend uses, probably stihl. I use tall timber and properly tune my saws.

I absolutely love my husqvarna saws. I like my stihl too, but it burns my throat when the exhaust isn't leaving....

I used this mix oil for a long time, then I started chainsaw milling.
    Screenshot (10).png

It choked me out bad. Ran Klotz R50 because I loved the smell but it gummed other saws up, bad. Tried Maxima 927, meh. Then started using Red Armor to help clean the R50 up a little. Turns out it doesn't kill me on the mill so I kept using it. Pretty subjective topic though as some hate Klotz. For me, the RA seems very mild. To your original post, I can't see different brands just smelling different. Tuned different yes, different oils, definitely yes. If your running the same mix through Husky and Stihl, and the Stihls smells significantly different, that's very odd. Do those stills have cat muffins and the others don't?

I've always used H1R in my saws, but it seems to give me headaches sometimes, so seeing I'm about out I just ordered some Honda HP2 to try. I mix at 32:1. I believe I used to run Klotz R50 Techniplate in my moto-x bikes years ago. It was a white plastic bottle with red logo/lettering I believe. It would have been mid-late 80's/early 90's. I don't remember what it smelled like, but I'm sure if I ever caught a whiff of it again it would bring me down memory lane.
