I HATE working on firewood duties in the heat so I'll cut all winter long. I'd rather be out in the cold than heat and as I'm cutting and splitting I am staying very warm. My saws come out of the garage that is never below freezing then they go into the cab of the truck so aren't usually too cold. I've cut in below zero temps and don't mind if it's not windy. So, on initial start up I'm usually not below 10 or 20 degrees. They certainly do pull over with more resistance at the low temps!! Sent from my SM-S536DL using Tapatalk
Probably around 10 degrees for me but it was sunny out at least. My chainsaw is outside in my shed right now and it's in the 20's tonight inside the shed won't get below mid 30's though, makes me wanna ask do any of you leave your chainsaw in an unheated space during the winter? I'll be bringing mine inside the house for the winter but was just wondering what everyone does.
Found the post from February 2021 in reference to post #6 above. Being only in the teens and wind chill below zero i questioned my sanity about hoarding today. Snow coming Monday and ground nice and solid so i layered up and cut the rest. About half a PU full including dead log. Just over a cord for the score.
I don't recall any temps too crazy, a few times it was around 20⁰ I wanted to go out and cut but got sidetracked or something.
I remember this well... After seeing this I understood fully just how much the locust affliction will push a man to the outer limits of his own sanity
I can remember a time or two in elk camp near zero and it was no fun. In the mid 40s is just fine for me!
Dad always cut locust for fence posts in the winter. Don't remember the temps, it was cold. We cut with McCulloch 10-10's and pulled the logs off the hill with an 8n Ford. Good times.
Low teens. We had a fire to burn up some of the punky oak and to warm up. Cut a bit and then warm up for a bit. Repeat. We were running a splitter, too. Cutting a log pile that was all snow/ice frozen together. I've brought my saw and bar oil in the house from the porch overnite a time or two. Ive been skiing in colder weather, but ya dress for it. Sitting on an open lift in the wind sucks though.
Don't remember the temps, but end of 2021, Lefty's fire was New Years Day 22 and it was close to 0-10 degrees, I pulled out the 550xpg for the first time. You know, science and all testing the heated grips. Work well.
I wouldn't even think of cutting in below 25F conditions. I don't like the summer heat so may and October are usually just the right temps. I have done a good bit of splitting in cold temps, but usually go warm up in the house after 45 minutes or so.
