I made one (can't seem to find a picture) , it actually turned out really and works perfect but I don't use it.
Found a hatchet is much faster for me.

One of the swap meets I went to had a nifty sliding hand splitter. It had a heavy steel base that sat on a table or bench and had a pipe welded to the base. A bigger diameter pipe slid over that and had a wedge welded to it. About the size and look of a drill press

I'd like to get one for a Christmas present but I have a feeling we'd end up with the hatchet again too.

They work well but just slow.
Safer ; probably. Maybe more suited for someone that is unsure about using a hatchet.
A dead blow hammer works great with it.
I don't think I would have bought one but had a few hours free time at work so made it for something to do.
I still like the hatchet ,

This can take full size splits outta the wood pile,I also made one for flat wood like flooring cut offs or pallet wood that can be used with a hatchet without holding on to the wood 20200219_165051.jpg

I bought the king. It works well. I had been using the hatchet before that and bout near had an oppsie, or several. Yeah, it can be a bit slow, but it works well with the ash I'm making into kindling. I think harder woods may be a bit more difficult with the kc, may be better with an axe or hatchet, for the speed and power.

A lot of people are nervous about using/swinging a sharp edge near their fingers, but there are trick's to make it much safer. I go over them in this video.

Show it to me the next time im there.

Ive set up a bundling station at wood storage and some of the splits need to be halved and even though the axe works ok ive thought of getting one of these for such purpose. Mount it right on a round next to it.

Yes sir , don't be afraid to remind me either.
I lag bolted it to a round , it helps being up higher any way more stable. It needs to be on something to keep it from skating around.

Yes, This . We had one of those KC’s gifted to us several years ago and it’s nice because DW even enjoys sitting down on occasion to split some kindling. If I am going to work up a larger amount of cedar kindling I will do it on the hydraulic splitter because it goes so much quicker.

I have an old riding mower tire sitting on a stump, I place a small log in the tire and split with an axe. Then place the splits into 5 gallon buckets

I think these are pretty sweet. I used to make kindling with a hatchet. Had a couple close calls where I almost cut myself. They are cheaper than going to urgent care to get stiches.

IMG_0089.jpeg Some people mount a bucket on the log to catch all the splits for less bending over. I haven’t seen the need yet. I can make quite a bit in a small amount of time. Mostly use sassafras for kindling.
