Hello all, just wanted to introduce myself. Longtime observer, recently signed up for an account. I'm from Southwest Kansas, ergo "High Plains Hoarder." Not a lot of trees in this part of the world, but I find running a saw, splitting, and burning wood to be very therapeutic. So when the opportunity arises I take advantage of it. Usually, it's clearing out dead standing or dead fallen trees for neighbors, friends, etc. I split and stack enough to keep myself well stocked for smoking meat and running an outdoor fireplace on occasion. I have started selling some excess, but no more than a few cords a year at present. I really appreciate all the knowledge that folks freely share on this forum. I hope to continue learning, and to perhaps be able to contribute in the future as I gain more experience. Also, there don't appear to be many other members from this part of the world. Anyone else in the area? I'm in Clark County, but the closest town anyone would recognize would be Dodge City which is just a little ways to the North. Thanks again, and best wishes to all.
What part of southwest Kansas are you from? I’m in Dodge City. Mostly elm for me here, but score a little variety with tree services on yard trees occasionally. sorry didn’t read your whole post. You are not far from me.
Horkn - I'm afraid not. We don't have a fireplace in our house and a wood stove install is out of the budget for the time being. I'd really like to have a wood burner in the house and my wife would be on board, but it's not in the cards for at least the next couple of years. Elm-er Fudd - Minneola. Yes, I frequently just tell people I'm from Dodge because it's easier. And to be fair I grew up on a small farm near Dodge, my parents still live there. Which tree service are you able to get wood from? Arensman dropped some at my place once because the tree pit was closed (I live nearby) and I was lucky enough to catch him before he got out of town. I should've got contact info, but missed it in the moment.
Howdy from the Buckeye State. Keep an eye on CL and classifieds for deals on stoves and accessories. Many of the older units outperform the new stuff in my own opinion.
Welcome to the forum High Plains Hoarder I've been through your area several times during the Race Across AMerica. We passed through Minneola on our way to Bucklin and Greensboro. Nice area.
Thank you for the warm welcome everyone. RCBS - I have been keeping that in mind. I've actually seen what look like a couple of good deals on FBM, but it's still going to be a little while at best. Backwoods Savage and Chud - It's funny you mention the race and the westerns. I've worked for many years (in the summer months) as a gunfighter, tour guide, etc. at Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City. I've met guys coming through with their classic cars for the race more years than not. Always fun to see what comes through! And I'll have to check out High Plains Drifter. Seen plenty of westerns (comes with the gig), but not that one. My favorites are 3:10 to Yuma, the Magnificent Seven, and for shoots and grins Blazing Saddles.
