I just bought a Vermont Casting Radiance propane stove for $280. Looks to be in great shape. Now in 2018, when I put my Jotul F400 wood burner in my living room area, I put down a 1/2" backer board and two layers of brick, for a total thickness of 6-1/2 inches. Works great to keep the heat away from the subfloor. But what do I put under the Radiance propane stove? I'm assuming the Radiance doesn't need the same amount of floor protection as the Jotul wood burner.
Nice looking stove, congrats! From the manual: Page 7 D. Hearth Requirements The Radiance Heater can be installed on any type of rigid flooring (e.g. hardwood, ceramic tile, brick, etc). When the heater is installed on a carpeted surface, a metal or wooden panel extending the full width and depth of the unit must be used as the hearth. The purpose of the hearth is to prevent the unit from sinking into the carpet surface and reducing the required clearance to the underside of the unit. There are no other hearth requirements.
How’s it been heating for you? when my wife and I had our honeymoon we stayed at a place with a freestanding propane stove and a wood burning insert. We couldn’t burn the insert hard enough or hot enough all day to get the place as warm as the freestander did within 20 min. I’ll never forget it. (northern Vermont stay)
