Opening of archery season today. Sat in the blind for a bit this morning. Cord Wood blind fitting right in. Its an improvement on last years debris blind. Its going to get up to 80 today, not ideal for processing. It should be much cooler next weekend. Best of luck to everyone, be safe out there! Lets see those deer and hunting pics.
As a general rule we don’t get many large deer as those of you do “up north”! However, we have had a really large 7 point hanging right up close to the house in our back and side pastures. Largest buck I’ve seen since we moved out here 25 years ago. Chances are slim that he’ll still be around for gun season but one can always hope.
My youngest took a 190lb+ 8 point buck last night. I am pretty proud! The blood you see is the exit side, it was slightly quartering away, and his entrance was just behind the right should but arrow deflected off a rib on the entrance, exited through (cut) a left rib on exit. Nice pass through shot from 20 yds. Buck went less than 150 yrds.
Last week the big 7 point came right through the yard. Not great pictures but hopefully you can get a idea
Last night I was finally able to go out and sit in the stand. I saw a few deer (small does) and later heard what I thought was my neighbor shooting his xbow. He was in a stand in the corner of his field and my woods/ property ends there. I texted him and asked if he shot. He said he just missed a nice deer. I thought I could see a deer in at the edge of the woods, but its thick and couldnt tell. I asked if it was a buck. Before he answered, the deer I saw came bolting down to me. It was a buck. He turned. Stood behind a bush for a hot second and took off. No time for a shot. The buck was in front of his trail cam. He sent me the pic If you look in the tree, you can see my neighbor in his stand.
Archery season has been slow so far. But, I've been having fun getting my small gun (6.5 Creedmoor) ready for rifle season. I think she's dialed in, now. Won't be able to blame the gun.
Neighbor had to work Saturday morning. His stand is just off frame Not going to lie, a part of me was a little happy that I still have a chance.
It finally came together tonight. It's been a slow fall bow season for me up until tonight. Had this dude come in the woods at 75yds and watched him make a scrape for a few minutes. I gave him a few bleats and he started heading my direction. He came in to 20yds but was hard quartering towards me after I drew on him. Had to let down after a solid minute or two as he walked out of my shooting lane. I drew on him again as he made another scrape but never gave me a good broadside shot. He finally turned and came back in the first shooting lane after I let down again. Thankfully made a perfect double lung shot and he piled up 50yds away! He was 158lbs dressed weight. I'm guessing he's a 5.5+yr old deer.
Congrats. Nice deer. I find it's hard to explain the feeling that overcomes me to a nonhunter when it all comes together. I had some luck last night as well. It's rather warm right now and I had no intention of shooting a doe. I told my son the same... well a case of do as I say, not as I do took place. I let 5 doe walk (only 3 of those were decent size). Later another 3 came by. One stood broadside for several minutes and I thought how each year I seem to let so many doe pass by and then wind up getting skunked or have to hunt hard in the bitter cold. So I took a shot. Right when I released I knew I pulled it. I actually thought I shot back and over top of her. The way she reacted seemed like a miss. Told my son I missed. Got down at dark, went to get my arrow (I love lighted nocks) and it was covered in blood. She only ran 50 yards or so and thankfully the broadhead did its job and saved my bad shot. Was farther back but not a gut shot. Not best pic, we were hustling to get her cooled down.
Thanks guys! Softwood yea he's got a pretty neat rack. Typical 4 on his left and those funky almost bladed tines on his right. Biddleman congrats on the doe! Those lungs go pretty far back and I'm guessing you got both of them if she only went 50. metalcuttr thanks! I love seeing how excited they get when I walk in the door and tell them I got one. Little man had just gotten out of the bath and almost ran out the door with his towel and no shoes .
