I just use a butane powered torch for the handful of times I need to light a fire during the shoulder season. Otherwise the Ideal Steel is choochin.

Strike anywhere matches are pretty hard to find theses days.

Speaking of strike anywhere matches. Did you all know you can make your own? That red striker strip on the box of matches is red phosphorous. It can be sanded off, mixed with a tiny bit of water and used to coat a regular match. Once dried you now have a strike anywhere match. An additional coat of paraffin will make it a “waterproof” strike anywhere match.

I remember seeing an older farmer use his thumb nail to light one of those matches.

I use a butane lighter of some sort, extended, bic or a match to light the wax/sawdust egg carton.

These were made about 10 minutes from here...and yes, you could strike them on almost anything (not quite, but close)

I was told same thing by my dad for those strike anywhere matches, so they were, and still are kept in tin cans.

I use the cheap, long, plastic lighters. I'm using it for 3 seconds so a quality feel is the very last thing I'm putting any thought into. I guess I'd use a zippo if I wanted to feel fancy.

Newspaper ( I know, I know) but I use the long BBQ lighters, and pines/spruces. Hot quick fires to get her started

red tip matches are hard to come by because meth heads use them to cook their meth with. Just like you have to ask for sudafed now and can't just grab it off the rack.
I use propane, myself, it's just easier to get a fire going than using fire starters/paper/matches.

Still occasionally use kitchen matches. Have mostly switched to an extended BBQ lighter that I can refill from a bulk butane refill canister. Use the same lighter for the BBQ also!
