Tossed a few logs in the living room at the new place. How nice is an open fireplace? I mean besides the massive inefficiency that is. Some of you may have followed along with my new house thread and know I have 2 fireplaces. I just picked up a Napoleon 1402 for 300 bucks that needs a refresh so I’ll be getting that into this fireplace pretty soon. The kitchen fireplace will either be getting a progress hybrid or fireview but that’s next year. Hope to have a few big fires in the kitchen one for the holidays though, it’s a huge hearth! Just wanted to share a quick pic with you all. It’s getting cold in the rest of the house!!

It’s about 170 years old, still trying to nail down the exact build year and some history about it. Check out the kitchen fireplace if you think that one’s large.

That’s gorgeous! What a cool old house. I had an open fireplace in an old house I rented in Denver when I was a pup. It was inefficient - however…. If I threw enough firewood at it, it would actually heat the place up. I was working long hours at a butcher shop then to pay the rent. I was broke, but young and happy. Most winter nights I’d sleep on the couch in front of the fireplace, because I couldn’t afford to run the heat. I cherish the memories of cuddling with my girlfriend (now wife) in front of that fireplace.

My guess is there have been some great memories created in front of your fireplaces as well :)

My first (and only) apartment had a working fireplace. The reason i rented it. Good memories of the GF (and now ex wife) and i enjoying it on the weekends when she would be over. Only lived there ten months and one Winter.

I think about that a lot since moving into this place about 5 months ago now. Not just about the memories in front of the fire but the whole house and its history. Like really find myself thinking about it more than I ever thought I would. I don’t know, maybe it’s just getting older, the kids growing up so fast, the recent loss of a family member, not really sure.

But yeah, I got the fire going with some t&g scraps and somehow smoked the place up good. Smell is just starting to fade. Wife was none too happy, that’s a memory for sure. As nice as it is I can’t wait to get the insert in, hopefully next few weeks.

It looks like a really cool old home. Less efficient fireplaces, but really beautiful with a fire going.
