Great trifecta score= primo wood that's easy to cut, you can take your time and FREE! Thats hard to beat.
It will definitely be a long term project. Saws up to the task? If not, that's the perfect reason to get a new one. I've been looking to add a 90+cc saw to the stable anyway.
Glad i was able to help! 90cc??? You have a 288 i noticed on your sig line. Largest ive ever run is my 500i at 79cc. Thought of getting a bigger one but it would seldom get used. Ive run a 36" bar with full skip chain on the 500 and did the job. If i cut a lot of BIG wood i could justify it but maybe twice a year the 36" bar comes out to play.
Been working on the 288 off and on for a bit. Acts like an air leak. I can't get it to hold a tune. I slipped up on a deal ($75) for a 36" Granberg mill a while back and have been thinking about doing some milling. I have my eye on a 661 here locally that may be coming up for sale. How much would I use it ??? I just have the "itch" for a big saw.
Then you better scratch that itch. PITA chasing a problem in a saw. Reminds me of my top handle Husky 335. Replaced the air filter and couldnt get it tuned correctly. I was on a paying job and it wouldnt run for chit. I gave up on it and bought a Stihl 194t. A nice and cheap 660/661 came up for sale on FBM a while back and at $650 i came close to pulling the trigger. It had low hours from the looks of it. How soon you buying it? Wanna see pics when you do.
Maybe, but at one point I thought clean ups like this were a good enough gig just to get the wood for free.
I'll find the issue eventually, I'm going to rig up some plates and Pressure / Vac test it. It's too clean of a saw to push to the corner. I've thought about sending it off to one of the builders to rebuild and port, we'll see. The 661, I'm just waiting for the owner to get tired of moving it around his garage. He bought it to mill guitar blanks. Hasn't used the saw or built any guitars in over a year and he lives in town/doesn't burn wood.
I’m jealous. Wood I have been getting involves a lot of legwork. Seeing stuff lying at the edge of the field is nice for you! Also, I hear you on the desk job thing…firewood therapy is worth something!
Awesome score! I did similar 2 huge sugar maples that broke in a storm; 12+ cord when split and stacked. farmer had a crop in field to get to it so we pushed tree line back 12 feet. And brush hogged edge of 25 acre field. Just cutting dead and fallen trees and limbing branches.. He figured we gave him 2+ acres acres of tillable ground for no cost to him.. he was that additional 5 hours of work 18 years ago and respecting his land; has given me permission to use his land.. he own other half of my property line (22 acres) and the 40 acres behind me and edge of that field will keep me In firewood and a made a good neighbor!
Awesome score, that’ll keep you warm a bit. Why o why didn’t you grab that mill, 75 bucks? What was the deal there? I have one I used quite a bit with my 372. Bought a 395 and have only used it with the mill once so far. I have a few trees on the property picked out for it when I get time.
It's definitely a long term task. Counted 40 plus dead standing oak the other day. Was going to cut today, but the son needed some help moving. Helping a neighbor with his old Ford tractor this afternoon, plan on getting out there tomorrow. If your ever up this way, give me a shout.
Took the day off since the weather was so nice. Got the neighbors Ford 640 up and running. Took the carb apart, blew out jets. She's purring like a kitten again. I does have a valve that's slightly ticking, that will be a spring project after his winter feeding chores. Tackled the 288. Did a P/V test, found a leak on the PTO side. The o-ring around the oil pump was wrinkled up and the seal had a lip folded over. (my bad on the install last time) Also changed the fuel tank (old tank leaked at the seam). Did a few test cuts and some hot restarts. I'll take her to the woods this weekend for some testing. Cooking some dinner now. Fried potatoes with onions.

Pretty decent wood here This tree has been down a while. Sapwood is soft, bark falling off, but the heartwood seems very good. Laid down some runners and will be split and stacked for time being. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
