    A hen appeared in the top of living room window! TOO Funny! Dusk here, chickens went to roost, we close the coop after dark. We have two end tables stacked on eachother for deliveries on our enclosed porch (door was open tonight from a tank of water he brought home), that last hen lost her way or was distracted or whatever and everyone went to bed and she was lost. She came into the porch, got up on the stacked end tables and was staring through the window at us :rofl: :lol::rofl: :lol::rofl: :lol:

    Looks like we had a first predator (all chickens are fine). The wire was ripped from the frame in a corner. Glad the coop door is rubber bungied at night. Our two smallest hens were loose yesterday afternoon, I thought was an accident. Nope, same two loose again today though I took a head count before chutting the coop door last night. Must have been Thursday night when we were in town for school concert.

    I looked at the game cameras today from this week... This morning must of been a active predator morning... Had a fox and two coons at about 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. roaming the back yard...

    So far Ive lucked out with predators. I do have this guy on camera up on the edge of our property. He'll get a dirt nap if he gets into range.

    Would have missed that second coon if you hadn't said something. As it was, had to watch it twice as he blends in so well. Finally noticed the shine off his eyes.

    Interesting to see how the flock kind of slows down with laying this time of year then gets back into the swing of it as they adjust to weather. 6 layers currently so if I get 4 eggs a day now that's a decent day. I know some put lights in their coops to encourage more laying but I'm fine giving mine some rest.

    Bought a light for a pistol on lightning deal, he put it on a shotgun instead. I saw a coon on on nesting box tonight and he went and got it. Glad it's gone, guessing it's the one that tore the hardware cloth on the enclosed run door and duh, explains why one screw out of the slide coop door mount. Hope it doesn't have big family.

    YAY! Forklift delivered today to move in the new chicken coop. I was dreading another winter with the flimsy coop we had to canvas tarp (thus could not reach the nest boxes to collect eggs unless we forced a child to crawl under it after we took out the wind anchors-that will be a task, as well as it's so flimsy I doubt it can be lifted by forks). We should have it set down on Sunday going to sit it on and bolt it on railroad ties). We have errands tomorrow including new straw pine shavings for the floor in the new coop. Stoked (lol, will be stoking new stove soon ;) ) to let them re-establish newly formed pecking order in a sturdier and better preditor proof coop!!

    Well I lost one of the golden girls saturday. I thought one of my crazy dogs scared her off and she ran down through the creek. What I now think happened is she was down there and a fox or coyote was too. He grabbed her and my dog was going after him not the chicken. Found a bunch of feathers strewn down through creek bed. I couldn't see what was happening from where I was standing and I also went into the house to grab the ecollar controler, to buzz the dog back home.

    At what cold temps do you start to get concerned for your chickens?
    Im doing the deep liter method in my coop, so I have larger openings at the tops on each end for ventilation purposes. Was thinking may be too much in winter.
