To kill it. Barrel used to be used like live holds Easier than shooting fish in a barrel. You don’t have to hit fish with the bullet; because the percussion stuns them.. I have only shot pickerel in lake. A season allowed Nephew fishes at with compound bow and beer at night
Now I am confused about what to shoot at in a barrel. If it was a Jack Daniels white oak barrel, I wouldn't shoot at anything that was inside it. This is my yesterday's customer's play area. He did a rather superb job of stacking I believe. Hope he doesn't go into the firewood business himself--I might have some worthy competition.
Customer said he had 25 tons of gravel dumped to make this area. He did everything by hand, even fixing the deep ruts that the dump truck made.
I use to tell customers that they should stack the firewood off the ground on runners, a rack, pallets or something and also top cover the firewood. I don't bother any more even though wet wood doesn't ignite easily which then could reflect poorly on me. I am always amazed with what I get paid, the value of the homes, and then they have me stack it on the dirt or grass. What would you Chud recommend? Certainly a dilemma for me. A few years ago I use to carry around tarps and advertised that I sold them at my Amazon cost. Not a single purchase. Think I was paying $28 plus tax for a three pack.
My two face cord customer this morning built four rack systems using cinder blocks, two by fours, and green house plastic roofing. Think he said last year that they cost him about $30 each to build.
If I suspect the wood isn’t going to be covered, I tell them to cover it with a tarp. I won’t deliver in the rain and I’ll tell people why. I’ve kept it covered for 5yrs just to let someone neglect and abuse my premium wood? There will be people who completely tarp over a wood mound and it doesn’t get air flow. Yes I worry about people letting the wood get wet and then blaming me for their ignorance.
No joke. Had 7 orders come in today. Cold snap arriving this weekend. I deleted all my CL advertisements and am totally dependent on prior customers. Great thing about repeats is that I can get away with delivering out a few days. This allows me to bundle 2-4 face cords per outing saving driving time and diesel fuel. Fifty face cords for this month seems doable. Approximately $14k. Minus a new wheelbarrow. Idiot me left a wheelbarrow in front of my truck last night while loading for today’s deliveries. My headlamp burned out in total darkness, so called it quits for the evening. Only drove a few feet forward while wondering what the weird noise was. I fixed my HVAC system with a $47 part this afternoon, so saved a few hundred dollars which will pay for a new fleet of wheelbarrows.
I am extremely sensitive to screwing stuff up that costs time and money. Slightly got over it after getting paid for my deliveries this morning. Firewooding opens up a great deal of opportunities to be stupid and dangerous.
Didn’t realize firewood was all about the Benjamins. Serving a basic human need for flames is what I am all about. Not!
