I bought a Fiskars splitting wedge from Amazon, it looked intriguing and the reviews were good. It is proving to be a paperweight. I've tried to use it a few times and it's very prone to come flying out. The wedge is difficult to set Eben m eccentric m even after 5-6 God single handed swats with an 8lb maul. Unless it is hit perfectly square with full power swings it will come spinning out!
Sorry, I did not pay attention to what "Auto-correct" did to my post! This wedge is difficult to set, even after 5-6 good single handed...
LOL, it happens to all of us. I think we know what you mean but moderators can change it if you'd like
Something I did on some stubborn wood was to give it a good whack with the maul where I wanted to place the wedge. I too have had issue trying to start splitting wedges. One particular round was seconds from being plunge cut for a starter hole with the saw. I had 3 different style wedges to use and none wanted to get into that wood very well.
Id consider pounding wedges cruel and unusual, but it looks like the edge isn't particularly sharp? Maybe grind an edge on it so it starts easier. Although that piece of wood looks pretty tough for any thing to stick in it
I was taking a full swing with the cutting edge of the maul to create a crease for starting the wedge. I'll take the grinder to it the next time I decide to play with it. Meanwhile, the wood grenade has become my favorite way to open a log. Rarely does fully split a piece of wood; it does create a few fissures for a regular wedge.
