A farmer came to try to get them on Saturday when they were discovered. They were still running around yesterday. The little ones will end up Yote food but I don't know if they can take down the big one or not. (thought it a black bear at first glance) My reward for having decrepit/non-existant fencing in areas. I'm not equipped to deal with any sort of livestock. Not a single place to corral them. They seem to migrate to any area where I am making significant noise. Thankfully have only seen males so far.
So I ended up with one of the 'floody' Makita 7900s. I found a workaround in that when starting cold, just pick it up and turn the switch to run...no choke, decomp or fast throttle or it would flood the crankcase. The gurus of the web indicated a possible issue with the metering spring. Ordered 3 springs a couple weeks ago. Today was surgery day. My first foray into the guts of the 7900. It is put together a little differently than what I am used to with a Husq or Echo. Managed to R&R the tiny spring without losing anything (and I didn't even have my readers on!). Finagled a little getting the carb & assembly back together. Buttoned it up and hit the pull start to get an instant start and die out of the saw. Choke on, two more pulls and she growled to life. Hopefully the flooding issues are now history. The spring I installed did seem a bit longer than the one I pulled out, but that may have been just from sitting compressed since manufacture. If you have a flood happy 7900 series, it could be the metering spring. I needed a win today.
Have considered changing title as it is kind-of time specific. Something along the lines of "Wayward travels of Redneck Extraordinaire".
Finally got some poles set for the pavillion on Saturday. A buddy came down to help me get the strings set. Ground is dry as a bone and had to be spudded as the post hole digger was futile on it's own. Was going to hang the headers yesterday but decided to wet the post holes to help them settle better. No concrete in the holes, just fine powdered dirt. Spotted this guy yesterday afternoon. 2-1/2 to 3" long.
Sometimes my 7900 floods, I haven't changed the springs yet. I normally open the fuel cap before starting it. If I use the decomp it will absolutely flood. I pull it over a couple times slowly. I pull it over hard 3 times with the choke pulled. Then set it to run. Sometimes it doesn't need the choke at all. Probably should change the spring.
I've been putting it off for probably a year, counting it as a 'luxury' and waiting until my wallet is flush to purchase. Well, the wallet hasn't really filled up lol, so it was time to get one. Gonna be weird sharpening chains off the saws, but I think I'm going to like it. I have a real appreciation for tools like this. Something hand made because there is nothing else on the market that does what it does. Unique and useful.
I did a start test on mine and it was able to be started using traditional methods. I'm not celebrating yet as I need the ambient temps to shift hard to build pressure in the fuel tank. I think I'm good to go but will wait until I have repeatable real world results before claiming absolute victory.
Gained some ground this weekend on the pavillion. Helped by scoring another load of cull. Felt like I was doing wrong I got this so cheap. Headers now hung and fully boxed. Have to decide what I'm going to do for rafters and will just about have it kicked in the butt. Hauled a load of red maple to my buddy's mom after Paul Bunyan on Friday. Then had to go over to that buddy's place to help him get some wood out. Didn't take pics. Couple of Shags, one hung by a fork into an oak. Got it down (with help of Mr. John Deere) and we got him a couple decent logs pulled out. Here's Cracker the shop cat inspecting some of the wood. He needs to know that the stove is going to be nice & warm this winter. Been making sure to swap out cards in my camera by the wood stacks. Appears I have a decent buck lurking this year. There's a better one that I have pictures of back in February. Not seen him yet this fall.
Oh I should update on the 7900 also. Decided to test it last night when I got home. Pulled choke and yanked twice...got a burp. Choke off, two more pulls and she came to life. Big time temp drop rather than increase, so not sure if I'm home yet, but will find out for sure once the temps rise back up.
!!!! The Prodigal has returned to me!! Neglected, dirty and downtrodden. Two degreasings and pressure washes and a teardown inspection. We have spark, we have a good P&C. Resurection coming soon.
Slow weekend in the woods. Rain made Saturday a non-starter. Went and ran errands then to a weenie bake in the evening. Started to mark some logs for cutting yesterday but it was threatening rain most of the day and I didn't want to get caught out cutting at the back of the property. Every time it'd clear up and I'd get started into something it'd pour again. Fully meant to start prepping a pretty big bitternut. As I was having a look at it and making some plans, the sky opened up again. Got 5 bucket loads of shale hauled up to the drive and spread during one of the lulls. Whackin & Stackin time is here. Hope Ole Ma will give me some decent weather next weekend for an opener.
I am currently recovering from a kidney stone - it’s still in my ureter; surgeon couldn’t get to it and had to place a stent. I go back under the knife in about a week and a half. For now, glad to be NOT writhing on an ER floor in indescribable pain. So I feel you. I hate not being able to scrounge/hoard/work. As irony would have it, my new X27 AND my new log splitter arrive today. And there they’ll sit.
