Today we dropped this black oak in our continuing efforts clear a pad for our new sheep barn. It was >3' at the hinge and ~115' tall. MMWS 395XP, a.k.a. "The Freight Train" didn't even blink with the 38" B&C fully buried. Everything went very smoothly and safely. The backstrap did pull out by itself instead of waiting for me to release it, but I was ready for that. The main trunk was 27.5' dbh and still over 20" at 55' up the log at the first branch and gun-barrel straight. Of of course the center was starting to rot, just like every other mature black oak in my wood lot. 20230915_191106 (1)_resized.jpg 20230915_191120_resized.jpg 20230915_191151 (1)_resized.jpg 20230915_183342_resized.jpg 20230915_190640_resuzed.jpg . This tree will probably become flooring for our in-law suite and of course a whole lot of firewood.

Yes we do. I was out marking trees with the forester the other day. We found a 38" dbh single trunk oak tree and another double-trunker that's well over 6' diameter. Definitely read or a selective timber harvest.

I took 4 logs for milling, each 13' long x 21, 20, 19 and 18" small end respectively. Straight and clean. These will eventually become T&G flooring or our in-law suite.

Here's some flooring we did about a decade ago with trees from our forest.

Primo logs there Mike. Sure wood be nice to have you're own mill!
I asked my dad twice if he wanted any of that pin oak milled. He declined. It was standing dead but had no center rot.
