yes, played around with a couple inexpensive ones, they didn't really save me any time. Lot of plastic and wear parts replacement ?. All the parameters of a manual grinder still have to input for each chain, in-addition the drive link count. I do have an automatic filer ( yes it uses honest to goodness files) for chains. On the really long chains - over 125 drive links ( I get some in that are over 200 dl) it saves me time. On the common sizes 55 dl - 120dl more hassle than its worth. Haven't seen one yet that will do Square grind. I believe the Frannzen ( $20 grand +) uses coolant, none of the others do, still doesn't do sq.. Oregon has one out that with all the bells and whistles is around 7 grand+ still doesn't do sq. ( re-badged unit from EU) There is another system that automates a standard Oregon type grinder. Have had a couple swing arm sq grinders- wasn't real happy with them. Have a Silvey RS2 at present but haven't messed with it much. Lack of time. I do have a DG depth gauge grinder , that unit saves me a lot of time, but not cheap at a grand ea.
Imports ( clones of Tecomec) vs Tecomec/Oregon( re-badged Tecomec). Basically better materials and motors on the Tecomec/ Oregon units. Biggest problem I face is wearing out the vises and stop fingers. So I just rebuild them in house, too pricey to order for what they are. I have a Silvey chop style grinder forget model, uses the 150mm wheels, it is just the ticket for a lot of those tiny chains on the electric/ gas pole saw units, the vise assembly is much shorter in length. Just my take on things. Chris

I've had the HF chain sharpener for probably 15 years now, 5 cords per year minimum. I was paying to have my chains sharpened and that guy would grind a lot of material off of each tooth. I think it was so he could sell me a new chain sooner. That 30$ HF sharpener paid for itself in the first year. Plus convenience of doing it at home whenever I want to. Plus I can just touch the tooth to sharpen it vs. grind it down like the professional. I'm still on the same grinder wheel, not sure if they wear out. It flexes but that's a good thing I can touch touch touch the tooth. Never had a problem with tooth length variation.

I have to grind rakers separately after many sharpenings. I use feeler gauges and a flat file on a mounted chain and go for 30 thousandths.

If I was doing it professionally I could maybe justify a slightly more expensive tool.

Wow, man I didn't think I had to buy a robot just to sharpen my chains.

In the future a robot will be cutting your wood for you. That is until a glitch causes it to think your the firewood!

You totally don't. Not counting tear down of the saw to swap chains, I don't really gain anything with the grinders as far as sharpening time. The quality of my work is perfectly suitable for my needs...and I specifically choose this phrase because I would never insinuate that I can more accurately sharpen than a machine with a jig can. If I were to ever have one, I would want it to be fully automated. I don't even know how a Shop can justify 25K for such a machine. That's a whole lot of $6 sharpenings. From another perspective...it's about 1000 new chains worth of money.

I think one of my OPE dealers has one kinda stuck in the corner at their shop. For that price one has to sharpen a lot of chains just to break even. :emptywallet:

The OPE in No. Branford has one like that , yeah believe it or not that the dirtiest / cluttered OPE on the planet has this?
It is hidden in all the clutter so you have to really look to see it.

I bet they gave him a quantity discont on those. Even still...that's a lot of $10 sharpenings! He must have the clientele if he jumped in like that though. I went to see where Green Springs Ohio was as I've not heard of it. Figured it to be near Millersburg but no...it's up in the tree-less flat lands. Kinda odd.

Well then he has obviously found his market then. Honestly, a smart move if you can make the shipping work. There are more chainsaw chains out there than there are people who enjoy or are capable of sharpening.

Whenever I see someone say "razor sharp" I always think of The Chainsaw Guy. He used the term liberally when talking about the chains he ran through his Silvey. He did offer sharpening services, but I never saw what the cost was.

They made it stand in the corner! LOL!!! I never knew it until i was there one day and someone was using it.

Have you gone in there lately? I stopped many months ago to get a price on a lightweight bar. Whoever the guy was took forever to do so. Havent been back. Guess i'd go to Guilford or Iron Horse if i needed Stihl stuff.

No I have not been there.
You know me and how I like things kept , it makes me ill to walk through the door.

If I need anything I have been going to Plastic Pony instead.
Thankfully I haven't needed anything lately.

Maybe Stetson can give you a PT job and you can whip the place into shape?

    No Thanks!!!

That is NOT a part time position by any means. Full time plus unlimited OT = maybe ; but no way on earth PT would even put a dent in it.

Really too bad , if he could get that place straightened out it would be a gold mine.
He does pretty well now for being so unorganized and cluttered but there is some room for improvement.
Couldn't imagine if he had a place that looked like Iron Horse or the Guilford place.

Did they ever put the sign back up? When i went by after it fell i thought they went out of business.

One reason i liked Bonnie. She seemed to give a $%&# about the place and was on the ball.

Dont blame you. Id hate to work for that place.

Have you ever seen Yalesville lawn & garden? Take a ride by and see. :picard:

Thanks T.Jeff and looked at them but sharpening is 75% of new chains at stahls .. So hard to justify the costs.

Nope no sign ; that was taken down by a truck and dragged up the road for a quarter mile before it fell off the truck and then was run over by multiple vehicles after it fell causing damage. They went after him for damages since his name was on the sign.

Bonnie was a great kid and she knew her s@#t , unfortunately another example of what happens when you get tied up with drugs.

Yeah I have been by that place , yikes. They must be hanging on by a thread.
