Mike, just a thought....since I'm doing a little of it...what about a layer of stone under the stacks? Even a pick-up load, bucketed and raked might keep critters from diggin'. And it would help with drainage.
Or, tie the single stacks with cross pieces?

Lots of voles around the property. Many bulbs and perennials didn't come up this year.

With nice air and an open calendar, I decided now is the time to put humpty dumpy back together again.

Because the wood was rained on and in contact with the ground, I'll leave it uncovered for a few days.

And, as far as bumping my wood, I'm gonna have to run that past the committee for consideration.

I'm working my way through various wood racks.

I worked on stack of red oak down to where there's 4yr css'd black locust. I'll leave it right there for now. Overnight fires with RO is just fine.

So, I opened up a rack of RO this morning.

I have some other RO that's older, but this rack is the furthest away. The older RO stack will be opened once the snow hinders my efforts.

I then hit a stack of mixed. Mostly RM, with some standing dead RO pieces on top.

    There's a 2/21 on the right piece.

I'd say I've burned through 1/3 cord so far. Not bad. Hopefully it'll be a warm season like last year.

I liken your stacks to a wine-o with a stocked celler. You walk in and select your type and vintage.

Ha. Never thought of it that way

I left the 3yr ash alone on this reload. I want to empty that 4' stack and refill with some ash I have.

Beautiful stacks! I build mine in similar 1/3rd- cord-maze fashion, and each new stack brings a an immediate sense of joy and accomplishment, but i certainly have a ways to go ! Thirty some stacks you say? That's impressive. My hat's off to you, sir.

    Thanks.

I have a few empty racks needing some TLC.

Being on the 3yr plan means there's wood stacked somewhere.

What's the oldest wood you've got stacked Mike, the locust? I have almost 3 cords of red oak that just hit 3 years back in August but I don't think I'll get to it for at least another year, likely 2. I can vividly remember stacking the RO back in 2020 thinking 3 years out was going to take forever...

    He'ah it is.
    IMG_20231201_100308.jpg

It's the nearest stack on the left.
    IMG_20231201_100647.jpg

It's the closest stack to bring to the house. I snow blow that area already, as the compost bins are just out of the picture, on the left.

I suspect most every split will have It's bark fall off as soon as it's moved.
