Thanks Just looking at pictures since I had to post from my phone. Pictures don't really do it justice. Curious what color does when it dries. Willing to bet it fades away but have to wait and see.
Yes that will be interesting to see what happens. I figure it would be too good to be true to stay that way.
I was thinking it was caused by a fungus of some type , kind of like spalting in Maple. This is no doubt ash , the log has been sitting for a year + in my pile and was dead when I got it. I think I got to it just in time. Hope it makes for some interesting projects down the road.
Another vote for boxelder. The bark on boxelder and even the leaves and branching pattern resembles ash. The center pith is the giveaway though. Ash has a small pinhole in the center, which is absent in boxelder.
Hmmm , the other section of this log was sitting with it( one long log cut in half ) and that looks like ash ( white in color) so I don't know what gives. No leaves to ID so thats out. I will have to take a closer look at the bark tonight. It has been sitting for a while and bark starting to fall off some of it so even an ID of that might be questionable.
I've only gotten boxelder a couple times, and the first time I also thought it was ash at first. When I didn't see any EAB damage though, I did some more digging. Here's some BE from a couple years ago: Elderly Manitobish Boxy Maply Ash scrounge
I processed it once. Tell you this, if any Stihl guy wanted to feel what it’s like to run a Husky, cut up some boxelder. https://youtube.com/shorts/p8PYYVOvHkY?feature=share
I recall reading that other trees can have this fungus and have a bit of the red streaks, but not as much as you have there...and I don't recall what species it was...not thinking ash though. And I'm another vote for that being BE...I've cut a lot of it, and the bark can look a lot like ash sometimes. The red does fade with time as it dries...won't disappear, but the intensity fades for sure...I think the wood turner folks have something that works to maintain the color, just not sure what it is!
Thanks for the reply guys. The guy I got it from swears it is ash , it was cut from his moms property so I don't know? I will see him today to talk more. I didn't get to a bark check last night but will do a little investigating when I get a couple minutes. This place is always has a lesson to be learned.
Yup box elder. The bark can resemble ash. You sure that was one of the logs i dropped back in the spring? Both were BE. Box elder split
