Feeling my age after this message to me about shingles from a younger woman:

I don't have sources to share so take this for what you will. After my MIL had shingles, I dove into researching it. From what I understand, chickenpox was a common childhood illness. Getting it protected a person from more serious illness later in life. After getting it, being around someone who had contracted chicken pox was like a booster for the immune response. The re-exposure kept shingles at bay. Now that the pox aren't common, and because of other medical interventions, shingles are popping up more frequently and at a younger age. I never had them. Don't know anyone my age who has.

The 110 year old SS Kyle, ran around in Harbour Grace since 1967.

Some people think she's deteriorated so much that she should be removed now, but there are other shipwrecks flopped over on their sides and still left where they are. It's only a matter of time now till that happens to the Kyle. Sad to see her finally starting to really fall apart. She's a big part of the community's character.

Never had shingles before but I have laid quite a few. 3 tab. Jets. Architect. MIL had them several years ago. She survived but said they sucked. That was probably 20 years ago now.

Did your school/neighborhood/friends have chickenpox parties like mine? One kid comes down with it and all us other kids have a slumber party at their house so we can catch and get it over with. All my friends, like me, had chicken pox scars. And now it's "
    Guys, we're not THAT old!

Glad someone else knows of that strategy back then. But I was taken aback that the girl wrote her sentence like it was ancient history. I refuse to admit I'm that old yet, will have my birthday candles switched again this year so I'm 35 :)

I got chickenpox from my sister in the mid 60's. I can't remember if I was in Kindergarten yet, or it was just before. My sister is older than I am, so she might have brought them home from school.

We did not have a chickenpox party (lived in a city at that time), but I remember the two of us shared a bed for the duration (less cleaning for mom).

I've known people who got shingles. One guy I work with, who is my age, had a bad case and it got into his ears. He was out of work for nearly a month. I got my shingles vaccine in 2020 on the advice of my doctor. My coworker didn't even know about the vaccine until I said something about it.

I got shingles while on vacation in Australia a few years ago. In the nerve that goes from behind your ear, over your eye and up on top of your head. Felt like nails had been pounded into my skull. I had the shingles shot too. The newer shot is supposed to be more effective.

Yeah we had chickenpox get together when kids. It was considered safer/best to get them while young. Unlike some other vaccines, chickenpox vaccine is proving to be quite effective. IMO, it really is best to avoid getting chickenpox altogether, then you don't have to deal with this shingles BS. Didn't have that option when I was a kid.
