Looks like a fairly good day. We had high 70's here most of the day. I took advantage and did some firewood work as well. Got all the older stuff split and stacked. Rounds of cherry, maple, ash and elm. Cut in fall of 21 and spring of 22. The elm split nice after sitting that long. Then I mowed, washed 2 vehicles, waxed one and jumped in the pool with the dog..... Time for sweet corn and a burger on the grille. Glad you made it through the horsey wood !!!!
Kicked some azz Jason. Looks like you and the saws had a fun afternoon save for the nail hit. How did your saw fare slicing through the compost? Any idea how much it will yield? Going back tomorrow for the rest?
Not at all, I was on a roll.Wife said you'll be snoring tonight lol. I'd say you kicked it pretty good too.
So I bucked the base with the scarr394 w/36”. Mike cleared as much of the rotten as he could after they were apart. Chain was feeling a little bit slow, so I swapped it, in case i wanted to cut more. No idea I just cut through a nail. I’ll have to inspect that loop, didn’t feel horrible. At that time, I swapped 24” chain too, made lots of cuts on the small stuff and saved the noodling for last. Got through a bunch, but on cut I felt it hit metal and stopped cutting right away. That’s when we noticed the shiny metal on that pic. My truck and trailer was loaded a little light because of the 50 minute drive. Usually I can pack about 1 cord between the 2, depending density of wood. Mike‘s Chebby had an 8’ bed. Not sure if I’ll go back tomorrow or Monday or the weekend. I have mom and dad a pretty darn respectable hoard!!
$%#&$ about the nail. Ive sliced through them myself without even knowing it til later when i found it on the round. For a 50 minute trip you made it worth your while. If mom and dad go cold its definitely not your fault. Nice pile of rounds there.
Decided to go back for more today. 36” fresh square ground chain was cutting like greased lightning. Cut out as much of the burl as I could for Mike to sell. Hit metal in this piece. Couldn’t fit this stuff. Left them a lot of noodles to rake up and that chunk. I’m not going to risk anymore damage. Nice size load. Too darn hot to be doing this crap.
I knew you couldnt resist. Way to get it done! What length chain did you wreck? When i first saw pics i thought lots of metal in there. IIRC does the HC make bigger chips like red maple when chain is super sharp?
That’s just typical long “ribbons” produced by square chains. Dry wood doesn’t usually do that much. The brand new loop of 36 now has about 5 or 6 damaged teeth from bucking through the nail. The other 36 I haven’t inspected much but I know it’s wrecked. Then one 24” touched metal but I didn’t even look at that one yet. 28” came out unscathed. Guess I’ll have some chain work to do on slow days at the shop. Kinda anxious to see what the heck was in there that the tree guy hit. I carved around it after we heard metal on metal from poking the scrench in the kerf. Seems like a piece of conduit or pipe.
My son is on vaca in FLA, sent me a screen shot of his weather app. Heat index was at 110. I’ll pass.. Came home and let the truck/trailer sit while I took a break. Mowed, exercised dog, then delivered the load. Shower, then 2 Tylenol 1 Advil and it’s finally time to suck up some AC! I kept 1 piece. The one that roached the tree guys chain. I want to see what’s in there.
Ouch. I’d say about 10 cutters took damage. Not 10 in a row either. Weird. So far it’s about 5-7 swipes with the round file, then I’ll be converting this loop to square. Heck of a maiden voyage!
Lol, can't believe I didn't even feel it. When I hit metal noodling it was instantly noticeable. That loop took about a dozen swipes, all on one side. Stihl chain is the bees knees. Wish I could afford it.
Way to go! Especially in this heat! Bummer on the chain. Still, a great haul. Nice to have that trailer; cuts down on the trips.
