Rainy here, but it's still 70 outside. Already had my first burn 2 weekends ago. GF thought I was nuts, but the dog appreciated it. Got down to 40's outside, and I had left the house wide open, because, you know, it was August. Plus I wanted to do a test run on the poplar, cause I had never burned it before. Didn't like the smell. Now I'm eyeballing some standing dead red pine for shoulder season next year.

We have ignition!!! I split a couple pieces of birch that I kept around as "ornamental" wood. Had them inside the house for the past year and a half and they had under 12% moisture.

Our wood from last year is still sitting next to the stove.

Now that I have a large catalytic stove, shoulder season burning is a lot more appealing.

I'll kick the tires and light the fires, tonight seems like a good night for a Hemlock fire, so we'll do it!

Right where I want to be.
Lit one up (fire in the stove) this morning. Couldn't help myself, since the house was cool, temps are only supposed to get in the mid 50's today, and it's a little rainy.

Cool hatchet Jack. Hey... that's got a nice ring to it... Hatchet Jack... :axe:

I discovered I could use my small hatchet to help with dealing with stringy red oak, when it's in the splitter. It was much easier and faster to hack a few times with the hatchet (while the ram was all the way down leaving the outside of the round all tied up in strings) instead of lifting the round up and turning it around to slice the tied up side.

The hatchet's also good as a toothpick... :picard:

We may have a fire going in the morning tomorrow or at least this weekend. It is cool, which is no problem, but it is also very damp.

All the chatter about fires, this wood has been on the porch all summer. It was what we still had after the last fire in May. Wife just sort of piled it up because I took the wood rack off for the summer. Almost time to get it back up there.

I'm no expert but I'm not sure you should use the hatchet to install that gasket. :)

Still warm enough in the house that the boss said no to a fire.

We will push some wood in this weekend so when the time comes, we will be ready.

We have enough inside for about three fires.

I can see Saturday being a fire in the small stove. Low 41, high 45 with 70% chance of showers and also windy.
