Severe Weather ?

We store our kayaks at that same marina. My wife and I were there last weekend and were walking around and looking some of those exact boats. Sadly, the guy who runs the operation there just put in a bunch of new docks.

 

“It’s like dejavu all over again”

We had a similar issue two years ago with water. Here’s the peak of the flooding at our place in Southern VT yesterday afternoon.

First pic is our driveway/front yard. You can see the pond that’s formed across the way at our neighbor’s place. The UPS driver is wisely stopped.



This is the culvert that goes under the road in the above pic. That “pond” in our neighbor’s front yard is draining through this at the time the pic was taken. You can see the wash from the road coming down the side of our property…and the UPS truck patiently waiting.


We had a lot of damage two years ago from a similar event. A culvert let go and we had a lot of wash on our property. It appears the water did go above the new culvert that was installed. But it did hold. It may have to be resized after this event.

Our property looks OK this morning. We had a neighbor send us some pics and aside from some piles of road dirt and stone, things seemed pretty good. Things look decent from the cameras too. Looks like we’ll have some cleanup this weekend.

Other areas were hit harder than us and I feel for those folks. Not far from our house, some people were requested to evacuate as two dams upstream (West River dams) are expected to start going over their spillways. The West river feeds into the CT River which is where the pic Flamestead posted is from.

Potentially Dangerous Situation

The Wrightsville Dam only has 6 feet of storage capacity left. If water exceeds capacity, the first spillway will release water into the North Branch River. This has never happened since the dam was built so there is no precedent for potential damage. There would be a large amount of water coming into Montpelier which would drastically add to the existing flood damage. This will be particularly bad along the North Branch River corridor and into the downtown. Unfortunately, there are very few evacuation options remaining. People in at risk areas may wish to go to upper floors in their houses.

The City has asked for swift water rescue assets to be moved into the area to assist when possible.

As a precaution the City is moving the dispatch center to the Water Treatment Plant where we have already established operations jointly with Barre City. We will also move our full Emergency Operations Center to the Treatment Plant as well. Computer and radio systems at the Police Station may become incapacitated if floodwaters increase.
Again, could be a dangerous situation.

As long as everyone is safe then that is step one.
This is actually having an effect here in Ct now. The Ct river levels are rising and warnings for some flooding in areas near the river sounds possible. Usually with snow melt we see a rise but this sounds like it might be a little more than that.

 

I looked at more pictures from mynbc5.com , the amount of damage is crazy.

It seems like these heavier rainfalls are the new norm.

 

On the high end of the forecast for this Thursday, we could get another 0.75 of rain.

I finally checked the rain gauge out front, not 2 inches but 1.5 inches.

 

I took a walk down to the river just now. I couldn’t see the actual Connecticut River since I’d need a canoe, but here’s a couple pictures of a marsh that flows into the channel. Normally that’s what happens anyway. Right now the water is flowing backwards and the marsh is quickly filling up with all the floodwater from up north. The river is tidal at this spot and according to the interwebs, peak tide isn't for a couple more hours. By then things will really be backing up.

I might be in market for a boat

 

Town well was ok, but a break in a main drained their storage tanks. Fence is around their solar field- looked much worse on the upper side.

A number of small bridges just up the road from us - just a few houses at each. They are Town roads. Two or three will need a bunch of work. A lot of hay/pasture affected. I keep my cattle out of grass that has been flooded due to stories of reproduction issues, possibly lepto related.
