Not sure but it might be the queens from mutiple nests that get together for warmth over the winter. Pure conjecture. It's my understanding only the queens live through the winter then in the spring start populating. Although come to think of it, they need workers to help build the nests they lay their eggs in, or maybe not. A real entomologist could tell you...
I had a couple of run ins with these back in August. Kinda startled the **** out of me the first time I saw one. Never seen them before when I was in Evergreen processing firewood. Dark Fishing Spider. 2" diamater. 1 of 2 found. Not sure how to post video, but 7 baby skunks kept us company all day saturday. They can't spray yet. One walked right up to my foot and checked me out good. Not in the stacks, but wandering in the yard.
Almost there Dave! I see those spiders often in the stacks. Saw one Saturday while splitting. We have an almost nightly skunk visitor to the back yard. Dont want to find one in or under, my stacks though.
Im around my stacks a bit, mowing and the like. And we have a dog on patrol. Kinda hoping skunks find quieter places.
I really thought about it. Skunks do make good pets. But in the end, they're still wild animals, I dont think it would end well. Thought about it tho...

I glad those buggers are not a threat to people! Mine was most cooperative. The deal here was "you let me take a few pics, I let you walk away alive". Both parties got what they wanted. Funny enough,Sca Jr HATES spiders. Hate in proportion to size naturally.
Not in a stack but under a board at my shed build. Dont know what type of snake it is. Anybody know? Couldnt get it to stay still for the pics. While im taking the pics a dragonfly buzzes by then lands on the snake. Holy chit. Couldnt believe it and got pics too.
On a stack when i moved the top cover. I was too fast for it. It slithered back as i snapped the last pic. I wasnt harming it and let it go back where i found it. Its not easy holding a snake in one hand while trying to take its pic with the other hand.
Had a couple of Hoover Hogs out by the stack the other night. They didn't have much to say, just scuttled off into the darkness.
Moved a top cover at storage this afternoon and this garter snake fell out. Made me jump. I am garter snake, hear me roar!
