theburtman I don’t know the details of each case, but things can happen. I know of one in which the officer was tracking for hours and awake well beyond what he should have. Got home and went inside to get his gear off, planning to go back out and get his K9 in a kennel. Sat in a kitchen chair and fell asleep sitting up. Awoke in a panic and found what happened.
He resigned, likely to save the misery of the termination process.

I was surprised when I added K9 back at my place after a twenty year absence. The dog selection was easy, it is the human the required a lot of evaluation.

within that community of K9 handlers, they are upset when they read of these events, and study what happened. Once again, the safeguards are in place, because extraordinary circumstances occur, so spend a little more money.

I imagine many States have laws that a police department must have minimum safety equipment. If not, this kind of tragedy will cause that response.

Again it's common sense. The dog had been working the long hours too and relied on his human to look out for him. He could have removed his gear at any time. The dog couldn't get out of the kennel he was baking in. The human's priorities were out of
whack. How much longer would it have taken him to let the dog out? He was definitely in the wrong business. The dog would have been better off at the Humane Society than with this guy.

I can totally understand how it could happen...I'm sure there are lots of times where the dog stays in the car during a call (I know that at least in the one case they were off duty) and can see why there needs to be redundant safety systems in place...what's really weird is that all systems failed...kinda sounds to me like maybe the alternator failed, battery/system voltage went low, nothing works without power.

I thought the same thing. Attribute that to the lack of professionalism and ability of today's journalists.....

Well, that is what has been released as an cover up excuse at to why the two dogs died. It all boils down to the officer assigned to the dog.

Don't get me wrong, I totally support and defend LEO.

Sure seems that these two officers are not able and capable of being in the field they chose.

Another facet to the problem is less and less people are stepping up to take the jobs, hence there are more non-compident's filling a lot of those jobs.

I had a young man helping me out here, labor and GM450, he brought pellets etc. I didn't know he brought his infant son with him and left him in the truck, I was clearing out a nasty shed from previous owners and guy was mowing. Oddly WWW had to come home for something, he heard the giant truck idling funny in our driveway and climbed up to open the door to turn it off and saw the son and felt the air conditioner was blowing hot air. (We were in the back yard and could not hear the truck over the mower) Thank God, that is no coincidence!

A few weeks ago there was a local family that lost their little 3 YO girl to a freak accident like this...dad was shoveling gravel out of the truck while the girl was safe inside the cab (windows were partially down...the girl stuck her head out the window and her knee hit the window up button...it strangled her while her dad was only a few feet away...it only took a couple minutes. :(
Feel so bad for these people, they are salt of the earth types...

I cannot imagine having this happen. That father will never be the same.
