Cut very little wood last winter , was rebuilding our retaining wall. It took me 4 months , a ton of blisters and many long days. Pleased with the results tho. Driving the rebar pins was hands down the hardest part. Each tie has 4 18” pins securing it to the one below it. I bought two 20” carbide tipped chains for the cutting of ties. $100.00 a pop but after going through all my resharpened loops it was a good investment. Got the ties cheap enough and had to buy a new right angle drill and SDS Max drill so we have about $4800.00 total in the wall including diesel for the equipment. Not bad considering cheapest quote to do it was 10k using our ties.

Thanks ! Pictures don’t really do it justice. At the tallest it is almost 7’ tall. I sort of goofed and hit it with the tractor while backfilling and pushed it out. Added a deadhead at the top row so should be good but was almost a big mess up. I hope I never have to do another one ! I am not scared to work but that is a job for a younger feller for sure.

That wall is huge! I can see why it took you so long. My sons and I built a railroad tie ret wall that was only 4 rows high and that was work enough. I can't imagine going 7' high and that length. It sure turned out well! Dog and kid approved, love it.

    Great job!

OMG, I still remember installing RR tie retaining wall at my previous place. We were still in our early 40's and it was not easy. I think we used 24" rebar for each level, but maybe I'm misremembering. The Ex drilled most of the holes and I did most of the driving the rebar in. I think the highest we went was 3 ties, so not nearly as much work as you put in.

I can definitely appreciate all the work involved there! I've used quite a bit of ties around my property w/o hydraulic help. Them sum beaches ain't light!! Round here, right now, premium ties are $25-30ea.

    Is that a pure Dobie?

We lucked out on the ties, paid 1200 for 240 of them when they reworked the tracks out. Y the highway. About 5 bucks a piece and they delivered them. Would have been 3 but for 2 more dollars a pop , yeah bring them to me !!

actually he is a Black and Tan Coonhound!

They built one at parents house in 80s. 14 feet high to nothing over 60 feet. At high point put placed 4 foot long T s to hold wall every 4 feet in height.. 40 years later still there!
