All...I posted this on the old, old site about a month ago. My buddy who co-owns and houses the Huskee wants in on the 441 at a 50% buy-in. Should I do it or tell him no?

On the one hand, I don't use it everyday and neither would he. On the other, if I kept it for my use only, it would probably last a long, long time. He's not a bozo or a jerk. He's a very fair and reasonable person, so it would be no problem with maintenance issues or cost of ownership. I don't think he would trash it either.

I didn't think that through. Nor did I think through cosmetic damage, although, I guess that's just something you live with.

One rule you'd have to agree on is which oil and which grade of gasoline used. I'd want my own bar and chain.

Sounds like a PIA to me. Unless you're both super hard up for money, I'd tell him he should just buy his own saw.

Sharing a splitter is one thing, they are pretty dummy proof. A chainsaw's a little different.

    My 2 cents.

I have enough money, but he wants in on it, and since I've mentioned it before...I don't want to offend him by telling him that it's gonna' be a pain and potential source of problems. I'll just have to make a call and go with it.

My answer is the same. I can see a co-ownership on the splitter working out. Not on a saw. Saws are maintenance intensive and many more opportunities to cause trouble. I have a good friend whom I would loan a saw if he needed. But I wouldn't co own one with anybody.

I kept my $20 J-red for that reason. Its the loaner saw. If they straight gas it or run over it, I am not going to cry.

The rest are MY PRECIOUS SAWS.

But if we was master, then we could help ourselfs, yes, and still keep promises.

Good luck with that. Hope it works out better for you.

/sharing a chainsaw might be the worst idea I've heard on here.

I wouldn't do it either. Maybe you could help him find a good 70cc saw for cheap to help ease any hard feelings.

Nobody is getting shared ownership of my saws.....
I've seen the way my closest friends treat their possessions, I ain't loaning them my chainsaws OR my splitter.....just my two cents...

Yeah..and he's a customer of mine and gives me referrals of other customers. That's the dilemna I suppose. I don't want to offend him, and I was the one who threw it out there back 2 months ago. I'll have to talk to him about it. May just tell him it won't work too well since I like to have my saws close in case I get a few minutes here and there. I should have thought it through before mentioning it to start with. :( My mouth sometimes works faster than my brain.

now we get more details ........ if he refers you business (good money making business that is) then maybe you do want to let him buy half. Maybe you can write it 1/2 of it off as a business expense if it gets thrashed

For the small amount of use you are anticipating & all the positive traits you listed for your potential partner. I would not have a problem with joint ownership. After all, you are already sharing the Husqvarna. Things to clarify: 1 - If he is storing the Husky, will you store the Stihl or would this give you the opportunity to take control of the Husky & let him store the Stihl? 2 - How you will cover any potential repairs outside of normal wear & tear. 3 - If you both are competent saw users, sharing the bar & chain may not be a problem, but I would keep a personal spare loop or 2 in reserve. If he were to damage a chain, in the grand scheme of things it would not be a big deal, you have your base covered. 4 - If down the road one of you should move, have a falling out, or dies, have a plan in place for dividing up the shared saws & wood cutting equipment.

How bout working it out so that you would"lend" it to him if and when he needs it (asst cost issues to be worked out ahead of time). Explain to him that you would be more comfortable retaining ownership though. With regard to his business dealings, only you can put on a $$$$ figure and what that means to you.
