This is the log splitter I started construction on and got this far, With some great help from Scotty and a few others, I took some suggestions and did some calculations, I'm going with a 4" ram X 24" an 11 gpm pump and with the horsepower I have should get me about 22 to 27 tons of splitting force +-.
I now have the pump and the motor bracket "not shown" and I'm building it as my pocket book say's, "and wife too":zip:... I purchased a powerwasher off of craigslist for $75 for the 5hp honda motor, two years old. The dumb a$$ started it up with no water going through it and fried the pump, hence my score! I'm hoping to have it done before Christmas, if not, oh well, I'll slowly stick with it. Enjoy....

Yeah, Dave! That is going to be a beast of a splitter. That motor you got looks very clean. Good luck with the rest of the build.

Right where I want to be.
    Ok, question.
How is the ram measured? Is it the inner rod, or the outer casing?
And that's the start of a nice splitter.

Ram is measured by the internal bore diameter.

Also, have you tried assembling the pump to the motor? Power washer engines often have a very short crankshaft compared to a standard engine.

Are you building a lift for it as well?

Like the height. Should be very comfortable to be standing alongside.

Sorry Dave, but a 4" cylinder with a 2,500 psi pressure relief as most log splitter valves are set & tie rod cylinders are rated, will only give you 15.7 tons. HOWEVER - That is sufficient to split most anything you throw at it with a sharp wedge. I have a 4" tie rod cylinder & use a 4 way wedge, (16" tall), most of the time. For real gnarly pieces I will remove the 4 way.
