I hear them fairly often and see them maybe 25% of that time. Quite vocal. My bucket list bird at the suet feeder, BUT with seeing the damage the smaller woodpeckers do to our wood siding and seeing what pileateds do to trees im kinda glad they dont visit the suet. Our house is surrounded by woods.
Granted we use the small cage type feeders that hold a standard size suet cake so its very unlikely a pileated with land on it. Very close to the back window hanging from the rain gutter. It would be very cool to see one that close though.
We have one living in the maple in our backyard. He’s made a nice hole in a dead branch. Very vocal! He likes to bang on the shed gutter every morning around 7:15AM
Jeffrey, I believe the pics you posted are of a Red Headed Woodpecker. The Pileated Woodpecker is larger and has a crest. They are a little smaller than a crow.
No doubt the one i posted is a red headed woodpecker. Interesting enough..... as i was coming up the driveway yesterday, i saw a Pileated one on a log. It waited till i was next to it to fly away in the same direction i was going. Last month saw 2 Pileated Woodpeckers in the yard at the same time. That was a first also.
If you look close in the first picture you can see both of them. One few a little closer and i was able to get a little better picture.
Smoking ribs in the back yard today and I heard a sound that was unfamiliar. Looked up and 2 orange birds. Got my son and wife out to watch male and female orioles for about 5 minutes. Beautiful birds!!
We have a bunch of pileated woodpeckers around our house. Im actually hearing one right now. I love watching and hearing them.
Orioles... My wife puts grape jelly in an orange bowl and they flock to it in the spring...They seem to leave town before summer hits!
Very cool. We had a couple come to the suet last year at the beginning of spring, but havent seen or heard them this year. I was going to try the grape jelly but never did.
We have the Orioles early here too. They will try to get nectar out of the hummingbird feeder but wont use the actual Oriole feeder we have for them. They love grape jelly and most any fruit you're willing to put out for them. Ours seem to quit frequenting the feeders in summer. Not sure if they actually leave or have a different diet then?? Red bellied woodpecker has a sweet tooth too. On the hummingbird feeder. Didnt think i could get a pic as theyre rather skittish.
We get those to our suet feeder. Recently, we've gotten visits from flickers. The 1st time we've ever seen them. Like a plump Woodpecker. I'm guessing like one of somebody's ex's. No pics of mine. Just this from the interweb.
