My coop build is moving forward but slowly. Basically the shed was only good for the posts. Everything else was rotten or not worth taking the 1 million bent nails out of.
Thinking on the type of siding, I texted my buddy who mills wood. Does mostly rough edge boards. He has 4/4 8"x8' pine and poplar boards. Kiln dried and unplaned. Problem is he doesn't have enough pine boards for my project.
I know poplar is on the softer scale of hardwood. Any thoughts with longevity used as board and batten? Roof will have over hang and I plan on putting a sealer on it at some point.

Some people on a chicken channel I follow use linoleum or peel and stick tiles on the floor inside below the roosts, for clean up & no moisture on the wood, that might help on the inside.

Start packing and get rolling. Not too hard to find yourself a nice spot where you can free-range like the chickens!

I recognize Maple, but not the white dog. So now you are gated property. Fancy that! Do I see that big pine that you were going to take down sometime?

The white dog is standing on the concrete pad where the port-o-john was, I think.

I also think that scary pine tree, is in line with the head of the white dog.

The white dog is birch, my pyrenese puppy. I posted him somewhere in the giz Emma thread back in the fall. Old tree still there, I'm not messing with it! Yikes!

That is a nice breed of dog. They are great guard dogs. Very protective of their humans and property. That tree is another matter. Sooner or later! Maybe Scotty needs another trip north.

Some friends have had this on their property for around 3 years now and it works flawless. I'll add more pics in a little bit. The YouTube install video explains it well. Would work excellent for your property at your turn around area or at the beginning of your long driveway.

Ghost Controls DIY Automatic Gate Openers | Ghost Controls

    The powered arm system.....

    20230514_052715.jpg

The lockable sealed circuit controls and dual battery compartment (you can also use a larger deep cycle battery)

    20230514_052739.jpg

Solar powered, this is just a 10 watt, good for 8 cycles here in North Country. They also offer a max 30 watt panel good for 20 cycles- there is also an ac power hookup

    20230514_052825.jpg

The zombie lock (wired) auto locks and unlocks as you use the keypad or remote. The wire simply zip ties from the end of the gate to the control board. Can also manual lock or unlock, comes with 2 keys.

    20230514_052856.jpg

Illuminated key pad, you can keep the master pins to yourselves, but create a different pin for others/ friends ect. On both the remotes and the keypad, you can set party mode (keeps gate open until you disengage party mode) or vacation mode ect. The gate has the option to auto close anywhere from 6 seconds to 60 minutes.

    20230514_052845.jpg

You can activate numerous remotes. One for each car, another for the house, ect.

    20230514_054614.jpg

There are many other options which I did not get. Some options are wifi camera at the gate, auto opener as you drive to a certain point with your car, tractor ect, a sensor up to a couple hundred feet from the gate, many more options. Lemme know if you have any questions. You can utilize dual arms and 2 gates or 1 arm and 1 gate. I wanted a 14 for gate but the supply store was out. I went with a 12 footer which is fine. Room for a firetruck if need be ect.

    Turned out pretty good......

He's a puppy but certainly started showing his skills on the property early on and more and more everyday. They are gentle giants and would fight a bear and a pack of coyotes if need be. I am working everyday on property boundaries as they will roam for quite a distance if allowed to. Have some friends 2 pyrenese that wandered 12 miles from NH into VT. o_O

If Scotty Overkill is in the area and wanted to mess with it, he's need his climbing gear for sure me thinks! o_O

A whole sheet of linoleum works best. I did this and it makes cleaning the entire coop an easy process. Putting a designated "poop shelf" directly under the roosting bars (95% of the poo will land here) makes life easy. A wider roosting bar helps them stay warmer in cold climate as they can blanket their feet with their feathers much better. Chickens can easily lose toes from frostbite.

Sigh... I'm out of town but wife sent me a message and pictures of white feathers scattered all over the lawn. Seems we lost one. There wasn't a carcass so I figured a coon got it but when she came home the body was laying under one of the maple trees. We've had a hawk in the area lately so I guess it got her and had the body up in the tree.

It was a pretty white gentle barred rock too about a year old. I hate it when that happens.

I've done this in my coop, cheap ole linoleum peel and stick, it helps for sure and it cheap enough I only need a handful of them.

That sucks and yea I hate it too! Once a predator knows there's easy prey, it can get outta hand quick! Good luck!

Bummer. I've had a fox hanging around our coop a few times but still hasn't figured out a way in. I'll be making a pelt out if it ASAP.
