It was a locust kind of day this morning. This one was only about 18-20” in diameter but I did put the 36” bar on the 390 for the bigger stuff. You tend to think oak is heavy until you deal with large locust rounds!
Thats a beautiful sight! The BL that is. (sorry Husky guys) Funny as ive never thought green BL rounds were as heavy as oak, hickory or sugar maple.
I dont scrounge a lot of it thats BIG. Maybe i need to find more to find out. Now if i only i had access to some (cue mission impossible theme). Ill have to do an unscientific experiment and weigh equal size rounds of each to compare.
Holt chit! Biggest BL i ever cut was 24" with the bark on. Try is the key word there. Post some pics of them when you cut. Id love to see it.
Cool how those get some bizarre shapes at the stump. Were you busting them up with that maul? BL hand splits rather easily. Is say one in three has rot at the lowest level IME. Thanks for posting.
If they had so much rot there was little solid wood left between lobes, yes I used the maul. If it takes more than just a few swings, its quicker and easier to use the tw6 with the 4 way wedge to make them manageable.
Usually I just toss it in the mixed hardwood pile but I do like a good spark show in my fireplace so this will get burned at home.
Cant be beat. Ive got a cord to see for this season. Actually have half cord listed on CL as i type. How's that 038 treating you?
I have cut up 100% of the oak I currently have so I switched my attention to cutting down some dead oaks in the woods at moms today. Only got two down but dropping in the woods is amazing. Let the dead branches blow up when it hits the ground and only haul out solid logs.
Yup, that's what harvesting eab ash from the woods is like...only they are usually already down, just cut the log up n go!
