Don’t let this become political but it sure is stupid! I’m surprised they didn’t include woodstoves.

Exactly what I was thinking. Heck, they (government) already mandated catalysis in them, next step is elimination.

Least I think I'm safe (for now) with my pellet stoves.... maybe.

No, cats are not mandated...I don't know what the ratio is...I'd say less than half are cats stoves now.

Pushing electric heat, and electric cars...yeah, what could go wrong?!

At least emergency backup power isn't restricted. Where to come up with the additional resources needed for the grid is a big question (I have no idea on how the grid health is in NY, but I do know that northern New England really needs additional capacity).

Could have done with a bit of editing/proof reading. There is a sentence in there that is incomplete that really stood out to me (and I just skimmed the article).

Well, if they do like they are trying to do (doing?) with mortgage rates, the poor get it free, and the better off get to pay extra.

Get everybody relying on the grid for all their power/fuel needs...makes it real easy to cut you off if you don't "tow the line" too.
Can't go "away" (or at least not far) because your credit card is cut off, and EV chargers don't take cash, (if cash still exists, heck, its already being phased out) can't stay in your all electric home (how much of the population has (or will have) wood stoves, and the dry fuel to run them?)
Just playing devils advocate a lil...but anybody that says this stuff isn't coming, is a blind fool.

The "tow the line" is spot on. Kinda like the Soup Nazi. You have too much ammo. No more. You are fat. No chips. You drink too much. Only allowed a 6 pack instead of 30.

If they're mandating electric everything why aren't they making it easier for home electric generation

They are... kind of. Rebates and such. They're all for you producing your own electricity, so long as you don't produce too much of it and are still tied to the grid. Because reasons.

Because, they can’t use it to CONTROL you, if you can generate electricity on your own

Our local community owned power plant will not let you feed excess back into the grid....they say it causes them too many headaches to do so. I think they tried it at first, but then said it caused issues with line repair.

We don't have that issue here that I'm aware of, but I can understand that. I know that they put up X amount of panels based on past power usage/available usable space. I work with a guy who wanted as many panels as he could get, so for over a year he jacked up his usage through the roof every month. Lights on all the time, dryer running every day, etc. :picard:When he finally pulled the trigger on solar, they mounted an enormous array on his roof. Now he's sitting pretty, producing enough power to where he's backfeeding the grid more often than not. Had he not gamed the system, I think he would've ended up with fewer panels, producing less and paying more over the course of a year.

I have panels that "should" produce 37% more than I use (the caveat being snow, overcast, shade challenges). But, I am with the largest utility in the state and they allow excess to be dumped over to my neighbors. I'm not sure there is a limit on how much over you are allowed to go - except anything over a certain amount has a different rate structure (and the application fee varies by size).

When I decided to look into solar last winter I started using the mini split instead of pellet stove for heat when it was above 10-15* outside. Figured as I get older, hauling pellets up the stairs and dumping them into the extended hopper will not be easy for everyday use, so wanted to see how much it raised my usage. Also told the estimator that I may change some appliances over to electric (although I did not need to justify going bigger than strictly offsetting my usage). His first estimate totally covered 3 sides of my roof with 37 panels which calculated to 253% of my usage. I told him to whoa down and we worked on it until it was agreed upon for 20 panels at 37% over my usage.

I used the pellet stove for heat this winter so my electric usage was way down from last year. Because of that,I started overproducing in March (and February I had very little draw from the grid). I get paid for my overproduction (and my bill balance has been in negative numbers since March). Next March, if I have over $100 in credit, they give me the option for an actual payout. Or, I can hold those credits into perpetuity. I also was able sign up to sell my RECs to the region (not all areas are able to do that), and I got 30% of my cost back when I filed my taxes. Unfortunately my state did not offer any incentives last year (I didn't plan on that so no big deal to me).

So, depending on where you live, you may have an easier time. The install company took care of all the permits (town and utility), got me signed up for RECs, and made everything easy. If you DIY, then you have to deal with all that yourself, but it is still very doable around here.
