The high winds back in March took down this tree. The campground owner said Hickory.
I'm not good at identification using the bark but the grain and the smell tell me its oak.
What do you guys say? 20230505_201951.jpg 20230505_201957.jpg

It does not look like oak. I don't see any medullary rays.

I'd say hickory. Maybe mockernut. Hickory has similar porous rings as oak but no rays. Fine firewood regardless.

I say hickory. Not all hickory is aromatic IME. The bark will be noticeably hard on any hickory. Hardest bark of all the woods ive cut.

Hickory, peel that bark off and it will become obvious.

Ive had my chain throw sparks a few times when bucking dried hickory, that bark is no joke.

Doesn’t seem like you have a problem there. Either or hickory is Primo

Kinda what I was thinking too.
Anything with growth rings that tight is gonna make good heat!
