The Cuyahoga Valley Senic Railroad is across from my house and I knew they were renting the steam engine this weekend so my wife and I went to see it. Man is it impressive.

They are very cool machines. The only one that I have ridden on was a Shay on a logging railroad in WV. I'd love to see the running Challenger someday and UP is working on a Big Boy to put back into service. That's going to be an impressive sight.
The shays are cool how their running gear is turned 90 degrees. Lots of torque to pull up the steep inclines. As for the big boy that would be very impressive. They are basically two locomotives connected together. Steam is cool!

Love 'em here too, as well as steam tractors and power hammers for foundries and forging. There are some videos on Youtube of the Challenger engines. One is moving at 70mph. All that iron moving at that high rate was pretty impressive.
Every year near Mechanicsburg, Pa there is a steam engine show. Here are a few pics from the show in 2012 that I have on this computer. I haven't transferred the rest yet. This train runs every Sunday around the Williams Grove Park. You can buy tickets to ride it but I don't recall how much they are. This one is set up to run a 6' sawmill blade. A couple times a day during the week long event they would demonstrate it. It's being warmed up right now for the first run of the day.
Awesome pics guys! My grandfather was a welder in the Altoona PA railroad shops for 49 years and worked on the steam engines there in his younger days.
Years ago we had one come thru here, I was probably 20-25 feet from the track and that is about the scaredest I have ever been of a machine!! I thought it was going to blow!! Gary
The cog railway that runs up the western slope of Mt Washington used to run a coal fired steam engines that would push cars in front of it. They have all been replaced with diesel locos now And at the Clark's trading post (NH) they use one of the old wood fired engines there for rides, the engine used to be part of the Lincoln woods line run by JE Henry back in the 1800's when they clear cut the mountains for timber.
We were lucky enough to take a trip on the coal fired Cog on one of our trips to NH. The thing that I remember most about it was the smell and the smoke. Pretty amazing.
In Essex CT, Essex Valley RR has a steam train. We have done the steam train ride many times. We have also done the cog and the Clark's trading post ride. We get a kick out of the fella that chases the train(part of the act) in the old car. We also rode the Conway steam train when we were up in NH back in 2009. When my son was small, We planned our vacations around train trips/rides. We went to Steam town USA to see a bigboy(my sons favorite engine). I guess a trip down memory lane in my future and dig out some old pic's to post!!
I've ridden the Cass railroad twice in my life, the last time probably close to 20 years ago. It's suddenly seeming like high time to do it again, and whaddayaknow, I live closer to it now. It could be a nice little one-night vacation. I bet fall color season would be a lovely time to do it.
The still run the Cog steamer, just only once a day now for the first morning train around 8 am. We saw it this summer. We also rode the Clarks train.
