Stihl Parts :(

Anyone know a place I could buy a bar stud for a MS 462? I’m just realizing Stihl doesn’t allow parts to be sold on the internet. Not a happy camper. Stihl dealers say it could take weeks to get one in.

I will bookmark that site but it lists the 440 also.
The studs in my 440 are different than the ones in my 462 but the pictured studs do work on the 440 cover. Iirc the original studs had a flat face not the tapered face coming into the threads.

The local dealer told me the taper was to accommodate the captive bar nuts on the cover.

 

Yes I saw that and at least one other place. That one seems to be in New Zealand and others in the UK. Don’t think I didn’t debate calling them and ask for it to be overnighted hahaha
I’m not even finding used ones on eBay.

 

So I pulled the stud. Things look worse than I had hoped. Not sure if anyone would attempt to helicoil that? I’ve never done the process myself but the cracking of the magnesium is probably a red flag. What say you all?
May need a new crankcase instead of a repair.
Anyone know a good Stihl mechanic? In the New England area might be nice Stihl dealers in my area dont exactly cause me to exude confidence. They’re sellers not mechanics.
Maybe best to send it away to get ported and repaired at the same time? Anyone interested in a job?

oh absolutely. Cutting a leaner with another leaner on top of it. First cut I hit buried barbed wire. Moved up the trunk a little and pinched the bar. Grabbed another saw and cut above the 462. At that point the tree reversed barber chaired. It split in between the last two cuts dropping the tree and saw on my foot. In reality it was some stupid flustered moves on my part. One of those days where the powers that be tell you to pack up your gear, go home and try again when you get your ducks in a row. I did

Trees I’m cutting right now aren’t that big so I began using my 550. Was a week later I decided to pull the chain off the 462 to sharpen it from the wire contact. It was then I noticed half the clutch cover missing. doh I had thought only my pride and foot had been hurt.

 

Maybe some jb weld with the new bar stud might keep you from replacing the case?

If I was to go the jb weld route, I would use loctite retaining compound 660. I used it on a 288 with a bum bar stud and it worked very well for it.
I don't have that saw anymore but I never heard anything back from the member here about it.

 

There are a few in my area but wouldnt recommend for repairs. How did you do that Joe?

Need a loaner 462 till its fixed?

 

That was my first hope. Still going to attempt it but have less hope. Have a few tricks up my sleeve but if none of the hole is still concentric I think it’s a lost cause. We shall see.

 

Well it wasn’t all that good of a foot before the tree/saw fell on it so I was lucky in that aspect Guessing one or two fractured metatarsals but I was out cutting down some small tree of heaven later that afternoon. That foot doesn’t feel much pain anymore.

Appreciate the offer but the two 550’s will pick up the slack for now. Only a few large trees kicking around and they can wait.
