Cleaned up the worksite from the big maple leaner, and hauled out another 18" red maple that came down earlier this year. Ill be burning this stuff next year. Wanted to get it hauled out of the woods before it gets too wet back there, so I have something to work on over the winter/early spring to refill the stacks I'm burning this year. Black cherry in that pile as well. Not as pretty as my splitting area, but its another pile of BTUs up at the house. Can't see any of it from the road anyway. Saving these hollowed out rounds for planters: Got some of the black locust split as well. Might stack this up too, but I still gotta mow the lawn today as well. The size of the pile hasn't changed much; earlier in the week I hauled out the rest of the tops of those trees, plus another broken off 8 incher that was hung up. Wish my camera had a zoom. This little chipmunk was checking out my pile as I'm writing this: Also had a little test fire with the poplar last night. Its been split since early summer and covered since last month. Getting sub 20 MM readings on it. Lit up pretty easy and burned nice and hot; guess well see what kind of heat quality I end up with when it gets colder. Took the chill out last night though.
Nice Shawn. I'd forgo doing the lawn to get the wood stacked, especially the BL. That's me though. Been using a lot more Red Maple the last couple years to give me a better chance of keeping up with the Oak c/s/s. The Poplar won't burn super long, but it's great for cooler morning or evening fires to get the chill out. I need to get some more for the same reason I get the Maple.
I hear ya. I do like working on this stuff in the cooler temps, but I push mow my lawn (I like the exercise), so the cooler temps are nice for that too. Don't know if ill ever burn oak, don't have much on the property, and if I ever lost any, I'd want it for lumber. Lots more BL and ash to be had though. The red maple will probably always be on the menu cause I have tons of it. Probably continue to mix it in even after the better stuff is dry.
Looks great Shawn! I just finished up processing about a cord of maple for next winter myself. I love the smell of it when splitting. The guy was taking down a bigger one and I'm waiting on the phone call to pick that up. I really need the second tree for next year - I'll be relying on it for the entire winter. I'm good this winter with my father in laws old stack, and I have a large amount of oak I split in March for 16/17. 15/16 is the tough one for me. I need more maple..lol..
Same with me, I push mow my lawn for the same reason, like the exercise. Hand split small piles of wood for the same reason.
Yeah it is. I think it might have become unbalanced because it was trimmed repeatedly on the same (driveway) side. I'm probably taking it down with my tree climbing buddy next year. Still seems pretty healthy but its just a matter of time before its in my living room if I don't do something about it. So I got my chores done in record time so I could play in the woods a little more. Decided to take two of the logs I was "saving", and make them into firewood instead. Both were in very low spots and would probably get frozen in place by the winter, when I'd like to drag them out. So, GIBIR! Immediately regretted my decision on this one. This is a cool log. Still got about 5' left of that one. If nothing else, I'm gonna cut a nice thick slab off for a rustic table. So I grabbed this one: Made for a pretty full trailer load. It's a good thing I installed this winch on the trailer, or my poor little John Deere would have never got it out of there!
What is "gibir"? I don't keep up to speed on the little sayings the kids are coming up with. I just learned twerking the other day
It was too dark to get a good pic last night after I got her unloaded. Looks a little neater over there capped off with the maple rounds. Gotta get some of this split and stacked now - I'm starting to look like a firewood hoarder or something!
