Bigtooth Aspen that happens to be old A coworker just dropped these rounds off right to my splitter. Apparently they were from the center section of the tree, and the rotted base was substantially larger. This’ll be spring 2024 shoulder wood for me.
Did it smell bad ? I have one in the side yard that was big when I was little and it's nowhere near that big.
Thanks Mike. I’m in the habit now of whenever I’m using the machine to split, get as many squares as I can from a round. They work great for cribbed ends. Although, this stuff may get single row stacked between a couple 2X4s. I haven’t quite figured out where I can sneak this stack in yet
Not bad really. Weird organic smell but not really off-putting. I found cottonwood to absolutely reek.
IME about the same drying time. The last score of aspen I got in February 2021 was burned that October, and was well under 20% MC. Burns HOT too.
Yep that’s the spot. Smaller tree that had fallen across the trail when Isaias hit. I wasn’t going to cut it, but one day it appealed to me Now I know to take the stuff in small batches anyway. It makes decent farwood. This was the thread: Cabin fever to Aspen fervor
I had a thread about the Big Tooth Aspen I have been burning this spring. What I like is it starts so easily. Burns very hot and very useful for getting other hardwoods started. It definitely has a place in my stacks.
Finally got around to getting this aspen up off the ground. Single row stacked under the new roof Pretty close to a face cord. I’d say that about wraps up this small score, but I *might* get more at some point later this year.
Now imagine felling a 36” dbh cottonwood and when you breach the osmotic pressure built up in the sapwood while making the undercut it spews its nasty sewer smelling sap all over your pants. View of the aftermath:
And that was after the show was pretty much over. Smelling like sewage for the rest of the day was a real treat.
Looking good. I like that red 2x4 in the cement block rack! Now that the stacks get no sun maybe a few skylights are in order?
I have a bunch of that red painted pressure treated lumber from when I demolished the original deck to my house. A lot of that I’ve repurposed a couple times already. The lack of sunlight conundrum does kind of bother me but on the other hand, generally the wood will be in there for multiple years before it sees my stove anyway. The stuff facing the front gets good southerly sun exposure. Skylights would be cool though
I had a bunch of those last July in Quoting a tree job the first one that did it hit me right square in the crotch like someone was using a garden hose, it did freak me out for a second until I realized what was happening.
