IMG_20140906_164357_951.jpg Spotted this in some empty space between 2roads in town. This is a spot lots of branches fall out and I get small quick scores as no one else cares or grabs it.

I was on my way to get my friends tractor when I spotted it. On my way back with it I thought it looked like honey bees on the rotted end that was hollow when it connected to the tree. On way back home I pulled the ATV over and looked. Yep there was a big hive in there:eek:.

Yes. Find out from the bee guys how to collect and process the honey before you cut into it.

Well if you're willing to risk getting stung, could get some honey and beeswax out of the deal. Check out the homemade wax firestarters thread.

Smoke to sedate them, keep your whole body covered, tuck pants into socks, etc. leave over half of it for the bees and don't disturb the brood chamber.

I cut into a honey log once. The residents were long since gone, I assume from the hive death thing that happened 10 years ago. But anyway I was cutting and then all I smelled was sweet honey. It tasted real good. I got some of it but screwed up collecting it as I learned after the fact that I had contaminated it.

Clem, Some of us here on the forum are bee keepers. I'm sure in your area there are bee keepers, call a local club… I'll dig and see if I can find one for you! The bees are important if you can save them and will be a huge help to the area. Let me look and I'll get back shortly. Someone will gladly take the bees!!! http://www.scstatebeekeepers.org Call someone in this web site close to you.

Clem, Here's some numbers…http://www.scstatebeekeepers.org/page-1213126 I don't know which is closest to you but I'm sure someone can help. You'll probably get some nice honey out of the deal and the bees will get a great home. Then you get a tree also.:D Win, win..

best to get some beekeepers involved - as late in the season as it is and the current shelter destroyed they are likely to move on or die

That was soooo.. funny! . I'm new at bee keeping this year and I have one hive, But even I would have to ask questions on collecting those bees. I know a little smoke as Grizz said is where you would start to calm them, Then my next guess would be to find the queen and her nurse bees, get them in a NUC hive and the others should start to follow her. Their gonna need most of their honey to winter over, so the bee keeper will most likely collect the comb and the brood cells and salvage what he can, Mother nature will take care of the rest.:)

I know I saw it. Seems familiar just cant recall all the details.

I like the tracking one where they had the powder all over the warehouse for the lizard
