I spent some time today splitting some of the white spruce I had taken down earlier this year. I found this nasty looking critter inside one of the splits. Any idea what it might be? I wasn't aware of any pine beetles or anything like that in Michigan, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. It turned to mush when I dug it out of its hole to try to get a better picture.
I'm not man enough to find out. I tossed the remnants in with the ducks and they scarfed it down, so it tasted good to them.
Did some digging. Looks like it might be a white pine weevil. I didn't know there were pine beetles in Michigan, but there are. Learn something new each day I guess.
Definitely a beetle larvae, some of them have some long life cycles. I find the mature beetles here all the time and rarely miss a dead tree with larvae in it
I find the same large larvae (sure look the same, anyway) in the oak I split. Some of them are 3" long.
I had the same looking milky clear guys in a maple I cut two weeks ago. About 10 of them... No idea what they are though...
I see alot of them under the loose bark in the Oak Ive been splitting.I save them and feed throw them in the fish tank got some perch and bluegills to look at.
Same here. Cut up a Spruce about 4 years ago that sat on the ground for a year, and it was loaded with those. The ones that didn't vacate didn't seem to affect the fire at all.
I see them here in Atlanta, mostly under the Oak bark, and I find more and more birds hanging around my chopping block to grab them, so I guess I'm giving back to Nature!!!
